How Do I Make This Sound? (Sub Bass)

Post by CookieMonster » Mon Aug 12, 2013 12:38 pm

Hey all, i'm after a quick/easy answer on this as i think it's pretty simple i just can't figure it out.

Basically i'm trying to understand what they've done with the sub basses on these two tracks:

First One @ 1:08 and owards

Second One @ 1:05

Cheers in advance guys!

They just sound like plain sine waves to me, the sort of wobbly bit I'm not sure about it's either something else on top of the sub or just simply an LFO on the sine wave

Yeah an accurate title of this thread would be "How do I make this sound?!" Very similar to the sound design section that nobody goes to for good reason.

It's like standing by the road with a sign that says 'FREE MONEY' and then when people stop, you ask them for cash.

I'm only listening in headphones but the only thing I can hear is that the sub bassline moves around a bit instead of staying on the same note so that it's more independent from the chords above it. There might be a slight amount of portamento on it as well. Maybe some slight volume automation or an LFO on the amp as well, but that would be very subtle if it's there at all.

It's also possible that he sent the sub to another channel, put some light saturation/distortion on it, and then hi-passed it, but now I'm just speculating :D

the first track there is defenitly not only an envelope controlling the pitch but also the sub has a few detuned voices. It sounds to me like basically a really lowpassed simple square reese with envelope controlling the pitch that changes it's attack sustain and decay throughout.

In the second clip i'm pretty sure its just two sine wave notes a semitone apart from each other (two notes next to each other on the keyboard). I know Cyrus uses this trick a fair bit in his tunes.
