Chord Marauders/B9/Geode synths

Post by DEADWOOD-BMC » Tue Sep 03, 2013 2:19 pm

Hey guys

First and foremost, I'm still a very inexperienced producer, so I apologise if this is a silly topic.

Recently I've discovered producers like B9, Geode & eventually the entire Chord Marauders 'group'. I absolutely love their songs and the style of music they're creating. But I've been wondering big time how they create their synths. A couple of examples:

0:15 -> The soft synth with the descending pitch.
https://soundcloud.com/chord-marauders/ ... b9-scrumpy

0:07
https://soundcloud.com/chord-marauders/b9-humectant

And eventually almost every song on the Chord Marauders SC: https://soundcloud.com/chord-marauders

I'm wondering how they create these synths. I'm not asking for a step-by-step guide on how to create them (but I wouldn't mind some tutorials :) ), but I'd love to know some more information on how to get sounds like that. I'm hoping someone could help out :)

Thx!

I'm not positive, but I really get an organ sort of vibe from these sounds. Like something you'd hear in jazz... I'd like to know how to make this as well.

Had a little go in Massive.. It didn't come out exactly right or anything but I personally really liked the sound so I thought you might like it too.

Turn the unison up to 3 in the voicing tab, and restart via gate on in the OSC tab. Add reverb via massive or some other reverb plugin. Turn off the second and third oscillators if you want to play different chords. I also have some tape saturation from Trash 2, plus an "Oakdale Vintage" amp setting under the convolve tab.

I'm sure someone else that isn't a noob at this can come up with something much better.

i know what you're talking about. sounds like some kind of modulated rhode-type sound. thought about having a crack at putting my own spin on it, might come back to this thread if i do. it's a cool fresh sound, gives off a very jazzy/loungy vibe.

No problem, coming back to it today I don't think its really what you (we?) were looking for, BUT you might like it anyway. :)

It isn't exactly what I was looking for, but it gave me a little more insight in the sound!

Thanks to 'rhode-sound' I was able to Google around and look for some more information, and it definitively is going in the right direction. Thx!

Almost certainly a rhodes piano, sounds like they've modulated the pitch as well. alternatively could always use just plain sines, rhodes sound very similar to sines

I found a VST on my computer called "Lounge Lizard" that is apparently a rhodes plugin. It sounds pretty nice out of the box with no effects :?

Indeed, tried it out as well and it's good some very good sounds for this style. So, rhode sounds is the way to go.

Thank you all for the replies!

If you're using logic there's a stock plug in called EVP88, that and a filter is pretty much all you need.
