Machine-like ring snares

Post by PhotonOfficial » Sun Sep 08, 2013 4:03 pm

Hey, it's me again. Just wondering if anyone knew how to make snares with that sort of ringing sound to them, used by KOAN sound, Audeka and many others. My prediction is that it involves some form of layering, but I don't know where to start and what samples to use.

The snare sound can be heard at 1:05 onward in this track:

Soundcloud

and can also be heard at 1:20 onward in this track:

Basically, I am not looking for a tutorial on how to make a good snare, I am asking what the process is behind creating snares with that sort of ringing sound. Where would I find samples with the metallic ringing sound?
NEW SONG listen please:)

I think its just the metallic concept applied to a snare, short delay, comb filtering, or convolution.

I've been experimenting with these and ableton's resonator but I can't seem to get anything close:/

Sample selection.
You'll find similar snares in metal/rock tracks. Metallica used some pretty aggressive snares on the St. Anger album iirc.
KOAN Sound use similar snares in a couple of their tracks too, but I'm convinced they layer with a metallic source sound... such as a hitting a metal pot.

Edit: Just realised the first track is an Audeka track... one of those guys used to post around here as Glyphex I think, and they're pretty friendly in terms of replying to messages.

Yeah, I figured that layering of certain samples would get me the sound. Just not sure where to find the 'metallic source sound' aha

I actually talked to my buddy KRAM about how he makes his snares in his tracks. He didn't mention filters or metallic reverb/delay effects, but he did talk about layering his snares. I can talk to him about it though.

I make music, and I came here to discuss it. If you want to hit me up on skype, its jimbo_tulpa_slice, and my FB is Logan Patchwirk Winterhelt.

Also, why do people always put Skrillex and deadmau5 together and think it would be awesome, it wouldn't.

I have snares like this.
Its reverb. (mostly)

Get a good sounding snare and add maybe a tom or something, something that has a harmonic vibe. So something you can tell the key of. But only slightly.

Put reverb on it, i am an ableton user, so my stock reverb has tons of filtering, post and pre reverb.

Set your pre reverb to let little amounts of high frequency in, and tons of mid, and various lows. 100hz, if that.
Then set your reverb effect, make sure it has spin and chorus, depth at max, but decay really short.
On your post reverb filter, set the mid frequencies to high and cut the low and the high bands. The mid tones of the snare are showing through for an extremely short time, through reverb thats how the sound is obtained.
A little tune of mine :D

Thank you all, but i've already managed to work out this snare by now. I literally just got a few acoustic samples with a slight ring (even the tiniest bit) and compressed it to the high heavens. I then layered the ring sound with a punchy tom sample and the transient of another snare I found.

Layer your snare with this:
Take another snare sample, high pass it, throw izotope trash on it, and play with different convolutions till you get that metallic sound.

Thanks for your help, but I've already found a much simpler way to do it:D

"The loud, metallic snares in ‘Meanwhile, In The Future’ were made by putting live snare samples through the Scream 4. It created these huge exaggerated tails which didn’t sound overly distorted."

There's probably more to it though ;)

Was gonna post this.
The question is - what scream distortion did they use? I don't have Reason but I'd like to get the same effect, have not come close with the types of distortion I've tried so far.
I need to stop changing my sig

Yup. Technically, doing it the way I do on FL, it is essentially the same process. By compressing the acoustic snare samples by extreme amounts it basically is distorting the snare anyways. You have to select an acoustic snare with a decent amount of ring to it though for the ringing to be brought forward.

What i would do is put a flanger on the snare along with a bit crusher just a little though. You're not going to find samples any thing like this. That snare is very original and also why do you want to be like someone else? Come up with your own shit man.

Haha go away, as if anyone comes up with their own shit. And I have already found plenty of samples like this and I can imagine that putting a flanger on the snare would sound like shit. But thanks for your input:)
