thoughts/experiences w/ korg kaoss pad 3
Just picked up a used but minty korg kp3 for jamming and doing live takes of tracks in my projects. Curious if anyone had thoughts, expeiences or tips with this kit as a live and/or studio tool.

from what i've heard, sounds on it are hard to reproduce EXACTLY. so you might get a sound you really like and unless it was recording it might never happen again? i think it was some artist who was describing it in an interview, maybe it's improved, that was a while ago..

Thanks for the tip. I never came across that tidbit. I can see that being true w the touch pad and all. Im set up to record easily enough on analog and digital so Ill beging by recording all sessions.

Am after a Kaoss pad or similar to act as a vocal processor w/mic input, so may be getting one in the not too distant future.
Re: thoughts/experiences w/ korg kaoss pad 3
Im not sure what your used options are in Spain (if I am remembering your location correctly) but I would go for the full size model as you can get one for not much more than the cost of a new mini. There is an awesome Beardyman vid on youtube of him doing a tune live in studio w 4 kp3s and one Kaossilator. That is what convinced me to make the purchase. I miss live jams too much. Might add an electribe back into the mix but also considering a volca keys.wub wrote:Am after a Kaoss pad or similar to act as a vocal processor w/mic input, so may be getting one in the not too distant future.

almost grabbed one a few years ago but they were way too expensive back then. Used, seems like a great deal. the hipass filter is especially nice.

183 usd didn't see terrible. I'm not having expectations of sound quality. Just going to approach it from what is the correct feature/fx for the situation. I've never owned a piece of gear that was totally unusable...but some gear can be very niche in its usability.Sharmaji wrote:almost grabbed one a few years ago but they were way too expensive back then. How much did you get it for if you don't mind me asking. I've been wanting a KP3 but I can't really justify it at the moment.
I have had a KP2 since 2005 and they are a lot of fun I have to say. I have used it in the studio and for DJ'ing. I've done a lot of vocoding with it by running a mic directly through it and I've used it as a tool for calculating the BPM's of my Disco records using the tap tempo button.

In no way am I dissing korg or the KP3+ that I bought from them. But I just got one about 2 months ago and literally have not found a single use for it in any of my productions.
I'd love to hear how you guys are utilizing it and routing it into your sessions.

I paid 183 USD all told. I thought that was a pretty decent price. Its supposed to be like new. I'm pretty stoked for it. I like dubbing some live stems for most of my tracks. I probably won't get back into DJing, but would love to get some kind of live PA going.mks wrote:How much did you get it for if you don't mind me asking. If you aren't using it "live" in some way I don't see the point of owning on. Just as a quick example, I'm hopping to use it on my bass tracks--modulating FX live, then feeding the signal probably through an analog filter or two for additional tone shaping/modulation. I'm very interested in live sampling/resampling aspect as well.TheReptilianElite wrote:In no way am I dissing korg or the KP3+ that I bought from them. Yeah, that's a good price for a KP3.
They are a great piece of kit, especially if you have that musician instinct in you, you can perform with one of those.
I love playing with touchpads. I've even wired that thing up as a midi controller controlling other synths of mine.
Lol, I didn't even see that you said the price in the post above when I asked. I read too fast.

just to let you know, the kaoss pads dont work as controllers unfortunately unless you get the kaoss pad pro. all good as middle man between the mic and your interface, its amazing as a vocoder, but yeah if you want more from it you might as well go with the kaoss pad pro..
i tried to use a kp3 (which i borrowed from a mate) as a midi input/controller with fl studio and after much frustration i found out the kaoss pad pro was the one i needed.
unless youre recording everything through direct input through an interface into your daw, having it hooked up as usb/midi doesnt do anything useful unless using the kaoss pad software - which doesnt integrate very well/at all with daw softwares.
i dont know if this has been fixed in the last year or two via korgs drIvers or patches, but yeah, using fl 9 and 10 with the kp3 and wanting its use as a controller turned out to be a massive fuckaround/waste of time.
i really want a kaoss pad pro, the pad would be the dogs nuts for modulation etc.

^ see my previous comment. get a kaoss pad pro, itll be more useful.
Re: thoughts/experiences w/ korg kaoss pad 3
It was not a walk in the park trying to program a Kaoss pad to be a midi controller, but once I had programed the correct midi cc numbers on the corresponding instrument and Kaoss Pad and taking in to account the vertical and horizontal x/y axis cc numbers, I was able to get a Kaoss Pad KP2 to be able to control defined performance parameters.LUNCHPADDLE wrote:wub wrote:Am after a Kaoss pad or similar to act as a vocal processor w/mic input, so may be getting one in the not too distant future.

To clarify, not looking to use the Kaoss pad as a MIDI controller. Real time vocal processing, plus maybe running samples through it for sound design purposes.

^ im talking exclusively about the kp3 here..
would love to know how you programmed a kp3 to work as a controller with fl9 or 10..?
im using FL Studio as a daw and upon extensive research i wasnt able to make it interact with FL in ANY way shape or form.. btw no sarcastic tone here - genuinely interested.
i was literally not even able to use the sliders or knobs for anything.. it just wouldnt read or accept the kp3.. as i mentioned, thats apparently what the pro is for (goddamn companies marketing the same devices for different purposes) but yeah as fun as the kp3 was, for someone who doesnt perform live, and couldnt use it in the studio (i didnt have an interface at the time) it was useless to me.
having said that, this was about 2 years ago.. korg may have updated drivers or protocols to some extent since then..
wub - yeah man i did fuck around with it as a vocoder man, the human feel you can add to the vox mods with the pad is damn near unparalleled.
although if you were looking at it just for cool voice mods and sample processing, i wanna point you in the direction of this:

Wub, for your purposes I think a Kaoss Pad would be great. It's very intuitive once you get to know it.

^ check out that vid, less space being taken up by physical hardware, vox processors are more advanced, more recent tech, worth scoping if you can.mks wrote:Wub, for your purposes I think a Kaoss Pad would be great. It's very intuitive once you get to know it.

I prefer hardware for noodling purposes like this, am working on building up a pure 'live' setup I can work with without having to use a computer.LUNCHPADDLE wrote:^ check out that vid, less space being taken up by physical hardware, vox processors are more advanced, more recent tech, worth scoping if you can.mks wrote:Wub, for your purposes I think a Kaoss Pad would be great. Sorry, I have never used FL Studio so I do not know what it would take to program a kp3 to it. I have programed the x/y parameters of a kp2 to different midi synth cc messages so I do know that it works but it was not the most straight forward process.
