Favourite instrument VST

So I've had a look through here and it seems nearly all the threads are people in search of specific bass sounds.

What I want to know is what other instruments do you use?

I've found myself stuck in a bit of a rut making tunes and I think it's because I have a limited range of instruments at my disposal (organ and piano).

Anyone know of good VSTs for other stuff like strings, horns, misc. others?

Edit: Yeah I had a look through their top 20 free VSTs of 2013, downloaded a bunch but THEY DON'T WORK!!?!???!?!!

(Running Live 9 Suite x64 and the VSTs are only x32 thus won't work; get your tihs together, Ableton)

But yeah any other suggestions (specifically instruments) welcome.

kontakt! deffinately! edirol has some ok stuff, problem is it loads back to default settings each time you open your project gets very annoying setting everything up over and over again, guess you could just bounce everything to .wav once you get it to your liking though.

IK Multimedia's stuff is pretty awesome.
I have Philharmonik & Sampletank (+all the expansions) - there's some really awesome instruments in these, full orchestras, choirs, guitars, horns etc. From experience it's similar to Kontakt. It's kinda pricey regularly but wait for a promotion - I got their full software bundle for £65ish in their black friday deal.

Oh my god, Apples Sculpture is insane, the best actual synth and not sampler for plucky sounds/blow instruments and basically most 'real instruments'. You get to morph between materialls like glass, nylon, wood etc and then you choose a striking method which can be bow, pluck, blow, strike etc.
It then has a shitload of options that makes it sound like a real instruments, great for precussion, bells, strings, plucks and anything thats supposed to sound human.

It's really nice, also has built in eq that has really detailed presets for most instruments, that emphasizes the key characteristic timbre of that instrument, which is really nice.
Also the usual stuff like filters and that, and a great delay and reverb.

I like the sound of this, I would much rather stick to synth than start delving into samplers (I'm quite new to all this). Presumably this is a standalone synth rather than VST, how easy would it be to use with Ableton?

Just to chime in on the sampler/synth thing... imo samplers sound better - synths can model strings and horns but they never sound organic to me, that's something to consider depending on the sounds you want.

Sakura (Image Line) is good for strings and wind syntheses, most of my pads are tweaked sakura presets with some stretching, reversing and plenty of effects and some automation.
Moved onto Kontakt libraries a bit more now though, got some free ethnic instrument packs and Soniccouture Geosonics, pad heaven
