Reaper or Renoise?

Post by SpectruMaddness » Sun Jan 12, 2014 6:06 pm

I've tested both and they are both great! :D I've made almost 1 complete track using both with ease...although it took me a while to learn Renoise, but after the learning period, time passed just like using any other DAW for me while producing. :) FYI I've used FL studio/Abelton before and no I'm not new to producing, been doing in the past 4 years (hobbyist)

I'm on a budget now and I know they're both good for budget but still right now I've got the budget to buy either one and as I've said above they both are great for me. So I'm confused! :?

Is there any one here producing electronic/dubstep-ish music - having tried/fully tested both Reaper and Renoise for a long time and tell me if you were in my place what you would choose to buy now and why?

Oh yes! I've read else where that the combination of Reaper and Renoise works ++++ for producing :4: so yeah eventually in time, I will purchase the other one and settle making these my final setup(choice of DAW's) so for now again...which should I buy first? - enough to keep me busy making couple of 'dubsteppy' :6: tracks before I + the other one)?

Sorry for the Re-post, wasn't sure if this falls under the 'general discussion' category :u:

I'm a long time Reaper user.
Wouldn't change for the anything.

Previously used Reason & Cubase.

Windows Movie Maker

»In seriousness, though«
Which do you prefer? They are very different and cater to different styles of interaction with the user. Without having actually used Renoise, I can at least tell that its interface is far more textual and less "eye candy". If you're not the type of guy that likes to stare at a terminal or wall of textual data, this may be a dissuading factor for Renoise. Likewise, this may draw interest from those that do enjoy text more than fancy buttons. There are other variables, but I've never gone into a whole lot of depth with either. You, having experience with both, should be able to make a more educated decision than I can. Between the two, though, I'd probably go with Renoise.

Less eye candy then let me see 'Reaper'? please. I know reaper is just in their early stages even thought it can do just about anything now BUT no offense to any users (or some may even support my fact) the native effects vst's 'looks' bullocks! just sliders on a window...but the output it does is what's supposed to count and it does it amazingly :corndance: but Renoise looks great!, maybe you were just staring at the tracker interface for hours XD the rest looks same and even better then many DAWS out. plus yeah the tracker looks intimidating at first...but if you don't look at it you will understand that its just the arrangement view in your DAW with many line moving across from left to right (before you place any MIDI/Audio) horizontally but instead its going vertically. PLUS I found it really helps to 'make music' with just sound instead of looks (all that wave forms in audio clips and you know what midi notes your MIDI clip is playing cause you wrote it!!! :|

but I'm not here to debate or anything just want to know which one is more better for you guys  but you should try before commenting on other DAW's and again the looks is better then Reaper at-least that's what I can say from experience. only Reaper can 'do' stuff you want and not give a s@#t about the looks :6:

Oh yes I would just like to share this fact which made me change my mind and to overlook Renoise's tracker interface and is also one of the reason that forced me to post this topic. http://tutorials.renoise.com/wiki/Pattern_Matrix if you don't like seeing the tracker for long (Eg. smalltock ;-) )... (first) just make the arrangements on the tracker then it becomes less like sequencers after that, you can think of it more like clips that can be played alongside other clips while recording + its like session view in Ableton live in other words (can also be used to make songs live etc. for those who want to do stuff like this, that is) which is currently not there - or maybe I some how missed finding it in Reaper :? ?
Electric_Head wrote:I'm a long time Reaper user.
Is there a substitute you found for this? or is there actually a hidden session view in Reaper :o

- if its NOT there then sorry that I'm asking to much questions :dunce: can you please tell me if they announced/planned on adding this feature on Reaper 5?, I've checked everywhere on their forum's and I don't want to make a new account at there's just to ask one question and never coming back :| lol atleast so far I know that there's not just me who want this feature on Reaper looking at other posts related to this topic :Q: and no worries, you can also reply "I don't know" cause I know you're not the dev of Reaper and I'm asking too much :P

If they don't even on 5 then I've finally decided to get a Renoise license :D :corndance:

I don't doubt that I spoke early. That's why I disclaimed as much in my post. I'm outlining a minor distinguishing factor to emphasize that they are very different programs and that OP should pick the one more suited to him emotionally/ideologically. I do prefer more textual/data-oriented interfaces, so I believe you spoke to soon, as well, SpectruMaddness :3 The Tracker looks lovely to me.

It really comes down to what you enjoy using.

After using Pro Tools and Logic for years my Mac died and i bought a cheap $400 PC.

I tried out renoise but I had no idea how to use a Tracker. I tried out Reaper and realized i could get a good workflow going.

I rebuilt the VST library and changed the shortkeys to Logic shortkeys. Im using it and dont see why I should change DAWs. Im more happy with my music than I was with Logic.

Yeah I missed the point you were trying to make smalltock, it got me to sit up straight after the 'less "eye candy"' part  cause I support it. So I apologize respectfully, I'm sorry :t: . I replied aiming for those who don't count it as a regular or just simply exclude it as a music producing software just because of its tracker view as everyone's on step-sequencers these days. So again I apologize. :)

anyways thanks MUT3 for sharing your thoughts! :h:

if only you said Pro Tools instead of Logic :cornlol: I would go after it right away! :D but reality is what reality is :corncry:

I've always found Reaper to be a solid DAW. Never used Renoise.

There is some renoise chatter in production right now. Take a look at those threads. The renoise thread, and the dry spell thread. Why not buy renoise, and continue to use reaper until you get the funds to buy it? Reaper really isn't losing a customer, as you wouldn't have bought it anyway. But then when you do have the budget, pick it up. Renoise does lend itself to stuttery choppy music. Of course you can contradict that with people that use it for symphonic orchestration, but renoise's strong suit is chopped sounds.
