Any pointers before this thing gets mastered? (trance)

Post by FarawaySkies » Fri Jan 31, 2014 10:34 am

We're a bit fatigued from listening to this for hours and hours on end. What needs to be adjusted before this is shipped off for mastering?

edit: track is pretty much finalized. I'm quite happy with its current state. Let me know if there is anything about it that you think could be better.

To me atleast, it sounds pretty loud for a track thats going to be mastered, what is the song peaking at in your daw?

I did some very light mastering on the track just for purposes of sharing it with you guys for preview. After the mastering plugs are turned off it peaks at -3db. Also, I've uploaded new version with tons of adjustments to the mix. Hopefully I didn't make it worse. Getting really hard to tell whats right anymore.

The main thing to remember is that you want your track to have enough headroom for the engineer to really bring the song to life.

I'm not sure if you've seen this thread or not, but it is a very good read:

However the most important thing to remember is that this is music! It's supposed to be fun! Whenever I start overthinking a track I find I start to get into a rut, so whenever that happens like to leave it alone for a day or two and then come back to it with a fresh mind. I hope this helps! Check out some of my tunes if you have a moment!

Well like I said the track peaks around -3db, which I've read is a great place to be at. How you like the arrangement and mix though? I just uploaded another version lol. Thanks!

I don't recall which version I heard, but this sounds miles better! Good job! Only a few things, when it drops it kinda just stays in place and although I do like the faint rising synth, maybe your track would benefit from starting with less drums in the beginning of the drop and progressively adding them on every 8 or 16 bars, or having maybe the riser become a tad bit louder as the drop progresses. The only other thing I would say is be careful of having too many synths occupying the same space, whether it be note-wise (octaves) or stereo image-wise. Overall though I very much like the track!

EDIT: Also when you get a chance please look over a couple of my tracks and let me know what you think when you get a chance! Thanks!
