I'd really like some feedback.

Post by Wolf » Thu Feb 13, 2014 8:33 am

Hi,

i just put out my first EP for free and i'd really like to know if anyone has an opinion. mainly on the mixing and mastering. I'm pretty happy with how the music itself came out but i'd just love to get some tips on what i can do to give it a better overall sound.

The mixing in my opinion needs work. Comparing this to professionally mixed work thats released by major labels i think the mixing of the lower frequencies especially needs work. The higher frequencies i think work well in the tracks however the drums dont have the punch i think they need. However this can just be personal preference. I understand the need for a massive bass-line sound, however i think it can take over that lower frequency space if youre not careful. Very admirable effort though! Mixing is not easy! Keep working at it, youre on the right track i think!

Yeah I was kind of thinking along the same lines. I think a portion of this is that I'm mixing on 8 inch speakers and I'd really like a sub to fill it out. I've noticed hen I'm mixing vs djing on a huge set up that the bass is there when I'm playing live, but it's almost an unrefined sound. And the drums lacking punch is something I've kinda been trying to figure out. Thanks so much!

Great ideas, it's very messy though.

Well aside from the fact that I'm not a fan of having someone releasing music under a name I've been holding dj residencies, playing festivals, and running a radio show as for over half a decade I will give you some objective feedback as well now are at leat posting in the right section instead of spamming. (Seriously though the name doesn't even remotely fit your music you make)

So with that out of the way. I don't like the music. It's just not for me at all but still I'll give you some tips anyway. The stereo image is all messed up on sleepwalker. It makes the hard panned percussion completely lose any definition and just sound messy.

Overall on all the tracks the snare sits in the background sounding kind of muddy and covered up by the mid range section of the bassline. The kick drums also lack any impact whatsoever and feel kind of limp. Really the focus should be on getting them placed well in the mix instead of going for the super loud flat brostep sounding drums in an attempt to make them sound hard. The synth sounds to me feel really lifeless and plain without any character. There's a million guys out there doing these sounds but with far superior mixdowns.

Personally I wouldn't even put work in progress clips up on soundcloud at this quality let alone an actual release. I'm not trying to be a dick and I hope I've said something useful regarding issues with the mix. Just saying that in spite of the fact that I can do better mixdowns than this I still don't put my music up because I want it to be release quality first. In fact I'm only giving you feedback because I feel I was harsh on you for spamming the main board and I want to be at least helpful regardless of any annoyance over the spam or producer/dj name clash. Maybe I will actually put something online here for you to comment on within the next couple days. I don't produce dubstep any more though so it may not be relevant to the board though

Bump

Nah tho, you say you mixing on 8 inch monitors, this is perfectly good for bass, I have 8 inch monitors. The problem is more likely your room, and getting a massive sub isnt gonna change the fact that your room may be off.

i don't really have anything to add that hasn't already been said. i'm just confirming that the mixdown does some to need some work. i have the same problems, the mixdown is tough as hell when you have alot of elements in the song. remove some frequencies of one sound to make room for another, then u end up with some elements starting to sound thin, or the song sounding muddy if u don't clean up those lower and lower-mid frequencies.

the only solutions to that i'm aware of is careful subtractive EQ'ing, some sounds just don't jive together well when the majority of the sounds' character overlap in the same frequencies. the other option aside from changing sounds altogether or EQ'ing is structuring it differently so the sounds don't overlap at the same time. u have a lot of creativity and ideas there though, mixdowns are tough but keep at it! good work homie
