Perception of loudness is totally relative.
So I was just mastering my song. I was like, man, I can't get it loud, it's so quiet, why? I rendered a mp3 and gave up. But after 15 minutes of browsing interwebz and silence, I listened to that mp3 again... holy shit that is loud. Loud as fuck. So the moral of this thread is to take 15 minute breaks as you master your song. This way you're sure you won't over-compress anything.

I tend to constantly A/B with tracks I like, helps keep things in perspective.

You should not compare it with silence. You should put it in after your favorite song of that stlye instantly and see if it has any impact

- A/B professional tunes with good mixdowns
- 15 min breaks every hour
This should be standard practice, IMO.

Perception of everything is relative.

When limiting, remember- or keep your monitoring at the same level.
For comparing levels within your DAW, something like Magic AB might be helpful.
A meter that measures your loudness range and true peak can really help as well, but it's
more of a broadcast thing really.

ever since i got my adams i cant seem to make anything loud enough anymore :S
doesnt make sense coz other ppls tunes are still loud, really getting on my nerves
i keep the unmasterd peaking at like -3 or so
then add stereo imager (not too much) multiband compressor mainly on the low end, and a limiter with like 2db GR and yet they still dont bang
soooo annoying
i know this is discussed all the time tho but i wish i knew what i was doing wrong lol, i try and give space for each frequency during arranging/mixing and everything >.<

Hmm maybe I will try the 15 minute break thing. I A/B with tracks already but usually when I'm making a beat I stay in FL for about 3 hours at a time until I get bored so I go do something else for a little bit and think about the track.wub wrote:- A/B professional tunes with good mixdowns
