EQ automation instead of sidechaining

Post by Still Young » Fri Feb 28, 2014 9:13 pm

i saw a masterclass from infected mushroom and they said that theyre against sidechaining
cuz' it cuts the attack of the sound so they got someone to design a plugin for them that automaticly cuts the low freq of the bass when the kick hits.. my question is does anyone here do it?
why so much people choose sidechaining over automating EQ on lowfreq?

Because it's faster & more convenient.

yes, sometimes. manually. i don't have a plug that does this. i also sidechain compress as well. the word 'sidechain' doesn't necessarily refer to compression. it could be any form of modulation triggered by basically an input of gain.

I usually just straight up sidechain shit, but if you wanted to be abit more in depth with it you could split the frequencies of the sound and just sidechain the bass/sub or like you said just automate the volume w/e floats your boat

If I feel the need to make my mix a whole lot cleaner, then I'll have almost every instrument's EQ sidechained to other instruments, so everything meshes. But sometimes this is not necessary. I find it does help a LOT though. It's better than just sidechaining the entire instrument that's for sure.

also fyi on many compressors you can set the sidechain to only effect certain frequency bands (such as ableton's compressor)

Yeah as said can be quicker/easier to choose set up side chaining. Eq automation or volume automation even can give more natural results and a lot of people do it this way. It's all up to you!

I don't know what's your way of thinking guys, but I think the goal of sidechain compression, is to gain more headroom. The only two elements that are colliding with each other the most, are the kick and the bass. Most of the time your bass is made out of low frequency harmonics, so normal sidechain compression would result in the same thing as EQ automation. For other things I don't see no need for EQ automation.
