both

my externals are USB2.0 although i am going to switch to Firewire once ive bought a new graphics card - cos the one i have now covers up my spare PCI slots so there's no room for a firewire card.

omg go for internal m8 SERIOUS

got a 500gig external last yr, its not bad when accessing files but fuk me, transfering large files is painfull!!!!

if u got space in ur machine get urself a SATA drive (depending of course if your mobo supports them)

external hard drives are all good, but be fucking careful mate! you want to ensure that if it explodes/gets stolen/dies/gets dropped that you have backups of anything on there. its definately worth investing in an internal drive as well as an external one, and backup everything to the internal one and then maybe even take it out of your pc and keep it safe in a drawer or something.

i kept my sample library, music that i'd made, mp3s, films, games and shit on my external hd and it died when it slid off the top of my pc. i would have shit myself but luckily i had all my samples backed up on an internal hd. still lost nuff of my music though. i must've had at least 5 hard drives die on me since i've been using computers.

all in all, i would say BOTH. will cost more but will give you peace of mind!
