So basically in this new project I'm working on, I have a DEEP sub bass, round about 30 hz, barely audible but it creates that proper shake through subs. I want that type of sub bass you can slightly hear and feel, but when I up it an octave it becomes that sub that you just hear, like you know the hollow sounding sine at round about 100hz?
So what I did was got my sub at 30 hz, and cut everything out everything above 35 hz (with eq obvs), got my sub at 100hz and cut everything below 90hz so there is no frequency clash and no "muddiness". So now it actually is a sub bass you can slightly hear and feel and it sounds pretty heavy. I just want to know, is this a good idea? I've only got the drums and bass down and it's sounding like there has been no problems as of yet, will I run into any mixdown problems later on when I start adding more elements to my track?
I think this is the technique (some/most) trap producers use to get the proper rumble in the subs and still make the 808 audible, will it go well with dubstep tune?

Layering a sub bass with another sub bass, good idea?
Re: Layering a sub bass with another sub bass, good idea?
So is what you're saying that you lp filtered at 35hz and hp at 90hz? Why would you not want everything in between that? I mean most of my subs hit around 50hz (obviously because I pretty much write everything in f minor)
I may have read wrong but what I think you're describing sounds like it would be incredibly thin.....

Re: Layering a sub bass with another sub bass, good idea?
hmm good point, didn't think about that. But then again sines have no harmonic frequencies so it doesn't really make a difference cause there is nothing going on in between. Most of my subs hit around there too, but in this tune, the key I'm writing in makes the sub so deep some systems won't reproduce it that well, and when I up it an octave its no longer a sub if I'm honest. So I'm trying to find the balance, and I just thought layering subs like that may do something unique, you know? I may have to put my sub 3, 5 or 7 semitones up from the original key though, thanks your reply and I'll take on board what you said about it being thinTEKN wrote:So is what you're saying that you lp filtered at 35hz and hp at 90hz? Re: Layering a sub bass with another sub bass, good idea?
I'd saturate your original sub or layer in an upper harmonic in the synth (or both), then low pass it to cut the major midrange you don't want. You could then also high pass it (use a linear phase EQ) and layer in a pure sine sub line again if the real low end becomes too muddy due to processing. This way you get your low end and some nice warm low/mid frequencies which are more audible on smaller systems.
Also from experience layering notes in a sub (almost like making a chord) to fill in the frequencies just ends up sounding bad.

Resample/print every note and then decide on what level of both sub bits you want in every note in your sequence. Like home made velocity with two parts.
It's a very good idea but it demands a few listens on different systems. Like car, in the next room, monitors and a small home hifi/boomblaster whatever. Should be 'safe' that way.
