Will high end midi/USB devices become like vintage analogue?

Post by legend4ry » Sat Nov 01, 2014 4:14 am

So, sitting on my dead night shift I just had this thought.

Do you think higher end midi devices will become vintage with the price tag of vintage analogue?

My guess is no, just because its only going to get more powerful and innovative over time. Vintage analogue only has resell value because it has characteristics which you can't get any more but I thought I'd see what people think.

I don't see people in 2040 hunting down a MPK88 or a ZED-18 and paying a grand+ for em like you see people doing so with analogue gear.

I don't know any digital gear that's really coveted unless it has an unusual quirk like the original Whammy guitar pedal. It's generally a really good idea to buy the latest stuff with digital because the quality is better

It's about the physical components in hardware and the components might just be too cheap in those kinds of digital/software unit.. but the way something is made can obviously become a tiny niche and elevate the cheapish unit.. like for example the alesis micro verbs (think early warp sound reverb).. or certain pedals.

Keep them in the shed :W:

I think you nailed it. Why would you want an MPK88 when by the time we are going to be beyond the capabilities of things like the Linn Instrument...

Will human civilization exist in any form recognizable to us in 2040?

Is the DX 7 collectible? FS1R?

I don't know dude, I think everything has a sound, and a way, and people can get into that, what ever it is. Even with the mpk, as a device interface. There will be people who harken back, and want that stuff. Maybe our stuff is so poorly built now, that it will be even harder to get a hold of working units?

My buddy and former band mate has our old adat, I wouldn't mind having that little shit back. I've tried pretty hard to get my Alex verb working...

I wouldn't put anything past anyone in this regard, lej.

What if something new futuristic form of gear replaces digital equipment like digital did for analogue? So you can't get a "digital" sound anymore out of a synth?

Then assholes with more money than brains will fetishize them and the price will sky rocket while most of us will by lol'ing at their dumbasses paying 2,300 for a Blofeld desktop...

Virtual instruments have already replaced almost all 'gear' in the music production market. Most 'modern' 'digital' gear is already extremely antiquated. I really cant imagine a situation in the future where I would want a 'digital' sound and find it hard to replicate. The only redeeming part of most digital physical synths would be form factor (knobs, keys, tactile control) and certain ADA convertors that sound amazing.

When was the last time you heard someone raving on about the sound/form factor quality of a Virus unit? Its really just a hardware VST these days.

Well Mr. Smarty pants, my virus b sounds better than most vst's I've put it up against. We did a blind test here a few years ago, and virus was defo winner. Perhaps u-he's synths could beat it, perhaps not, just on sound.

You're moody these days nowaysj,

Do you need a hug mate?

:w:

fo' real though.

I do love the virus, it is def better than VSTs but I get what you're saying. Just like the JV10/2080's are just like a Massive bank.

I'd much rather have one of those old modules.

This wasn't my point though, of course digital/VA synths will have a price, I am talking about midi devices, usb mixers, soundcards and stuff.

I actually passed over buying a virus recently because I can spend the money on a midi keyboard with controls that'll last longer. There's still some vsts I think are worth having like Albino and that's almost ten years old now, won't be too long until another comes along though (or has already and I just don't know it)

i think they would get expensive because eventually they will become 'vintage'

no doubt technology will only get better and cheaper, in 15 years everything we use will all be wireless and have app stores in them with massive touchscreen knobs and touchscreen keys.
People will look back at the 'golden days' when we had to use wires and had to actually turn physical knobs.

Yea, I can't really see people getting hype about USB and MIDI devices in the future. Honestly the build quality of most of them probably won't have them lasting that long. MIDI continues to be a standard format, but I can USB going away simply because its not a dedicated niche format.

Also, I can see that a lot of people here are totally missing the point of owning hardware these days, but I won't get more OT than we have already.

I love these synths. They are pad machines.

Don't know about Midi or USB Devices but Korg Electribe seems to have somekind of "vintage" reputation or value and it's a digital device - unless you count the analogue tubes on EMX or ESX
