Layering kicks with phase

Post by JamesHanvey » Tue Nov 11, 2014 1:56 pm

If you layer kicks (which I know isn't something everyone would recommend) how do you go about setting the phase on each sample so they sit better and avoid any of the sample being silenced out because of the +\- (Im not sure what the term is for that).

So far I've just been messing around with it but i'm probably not doing it right

Flip the phase, if its louder use that one. If not or if it gets quieter then flip the phase back. This is especially obvious off ur saw has a good resolution representation of the audio. U can even use a phase rotator but idk if its ever really worth it

Yeah go with what sounds better. Sometimes either phase sounds better not just one that's just more in phase

Move the samples around a few ms and try to where it sounds the weakest. Then flip the phase and it's suddenly at it's strongest

I've recently found that a really good way to keep the phase in check with layering kicks is to use linear phase EQ's. Ozone mastering EQ is decent as is the Pro-Q, although you have to enable the linear phase mode on Pro-Q.

Not sure what sequencer you are using but in Cubase you can move audio by ticks which is good for fine tuning the position/phase more accurately.

^ Aye, means you don't get into these weird situations where your kick hits at -12dB, you high pass it at 50Hz, and suddenly it's hitting -8dB, despite you "didn't" boost anything.
