I might be wrong but I think the higher the bitrate, the more headroom - 24 bit/96kHz should work fine. The other part of this will be your mic; an omni would probably be preferable to a directional condenser.

Go to taperssection.com forum. It's dedicated to live music recording. People can help there to choose the right config.
If you can afford, you should get an external mic+battery box to your recorder. 96khz is needless, 44.1 or 48k would be the okay. 24bit is okay, because you can set the record levels low (to avoid accidental clipping) and it will be still way above the noise floor. I use Zoom H2, it can handle 120dB according to manufacturer's data sheet. I recorded many rock shows with this recorder close to stage and no distortion.
