General Forum under spam attack

Post by mks » Sat Jan 03, 2015 8:26 am

It's like 10 pages deep right now. Riddles, you posted in a thread about it. Do you have the authority to delete those threads? Are you guys using blacklists or whitelists? I know there are a lot of false positive issues which take some administrative effort. I tried looking up how phpbb handles these things. It sounds like you did finally enable captcha? I think the idea of janitors is a good one.

I just went through the sign up process again just to see whats up and we apparently have a pretty decent "capcha" (selecting black vinyls from transparent ones) . This leads me to believe that the spammers have fully busted this type of capcha. Time to move >>> it seems.

I have a feeling moving fwd tho requires a lot of work and money that "we" don't really have.

I used to moderate a skateboarding forum and it got fully bunned by this same type of thing. I'm just confused that it only hits general from what I can tell.

It seems to be isolated to the general forum at the moment. As far as the time and money, that is why some janitors or some more mods would be a good idea. And start implementing some blacklists for issues such as this one. The mods can see what domains all of this spam is coming from.

Wouldn't a word captcha be better than and image one? Surely its easier for a computer to see black vinyl than words?

We delete them as fast as we can. From what i've heard from the admins, it appears its actual people signing up to the forum, so the captcha doesn't work. A solution is being worked on, we had closed registrations to stop them but everyone was complaining about no registrations being open.

All that melts away when the lights are down and the bass is up.

maybe a simple question about dubstep for the registration? i.e how many gun fingers per minute is dubstep: 140.

also, setting a hard limit on how many topics a user can post per hour

What is the idea behind this kind of spam? Does it actually generate income for anyone in the end?

Don't know, but there's 2€ (about 2.50$)/minute phone numbers for fortune-tellers in newspapers too, at least over here in Finland, and those ads aren't cheap, compared to spamming which is free.

just give some of the regular, mature members the ability to move threads to some hidden sub forum and monitor them closely. right?
