Any tips to get a good sense of space in tracks?
EQing clashing freqs/good mixdown aside

Re: Space
pretty much the obvious, if you have few similiar instruments, pan them a little in the opposite sides and use the same kinda (if not the same) reverb on both. One tip is also using a really subtle slapback delay

Re: Space
I've started just putting a reverb on the master, one with a HFP, and doing like 10%(ish) wet.

Re: Space
Yea. Doesn't always work. I was doing it a lot when I was recording one stereo track for hardware jams.jaydot wrote:that's always messed up my mixfragments wrote:I've started just putting a reverb on the master, one with a HFP, and doing like 10%(ish) wet.

Re: Space
I used to use the K-Stereo emulator "SHEPPI" VST, but think I probably wasn't using it correctly - too much or too little usually. Mixes either got washed out or the effect would get lost in the overall spread.

Probably worth another look, at least to understand what it's doing and why that gives tracks the impression of more space.

Re: Space
Applying the same reverb to your whole mix will detract from a sense of 'space' in my experience. Space seems to come from contrast in the different sounds in the mix. Some close up, some pushed to the back, same with side to side. Some elements out to the sides contrasting with the mid.
I dont mean using a bunch of different reverbs, but to use 1 or 2, and apply different amounts of the reverbs to various elements. (Don't forget to automate that dry/wet knob subtly to get a more active mix)
Also, dont forget the basics things like volume, great for moving things front to back in the mix. Simple and effective.
I often find most stereo spreading type plugins/tools to very tricky to use well. Often ends up muddying and confusing the mix for me. That personally might have something to do with my very poor monitoring set up though so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Re: Space
We covered a bunch of stereo widening tricks in this thread:

Aside from reverb, also remember the basic psychoacoustic effects that make something
sound 'far away'. Little high frequency content and low volume
It's usually a good idea to not use the master reverb in Ozone too.
