How to get motivated/excited about production again?
Hey guys. So I have been having issues recently with getting back into producing. I feel unmotivated and don't necessarily even enjoy the experience as much as I used to. I don't know what to do as I miss it terribly and wish I still had the passion for it but currently I just don't and I don't know why. I have been trying to do little bits here and there and some of it is okay but I can't find that drive to push through and really finish and develop my ideas.
Does anyone have any tips or advice on how to get out of this funk or any stories on how this has happened to them but they are beyond it?
Being creative is a hard thing. It is time consuming and I find in my busy life currently there isn't space for it. This makes me very sad. Even when I do have free time. That motivation to sit down and get to work isn't their and I really miss just relaxing and having down time. It is a tough situation.
Any advice is welcome. Thanks very much!

I find creativity requires inspiration and I'm not always inspired so my creativity also ebbs and flows. The biggest inspiration for me is listening to good music - this is what motivates me to get back in front of the DAW.

Pick up a physical instrument. Does wonders for me.

I can't really play keys properly, but having some knobby synths and FX about...its really great just noodle and make noise sometimes. I usually find an idea inside of that.

Try making different music?

I get this same feeling every time when I for XXXth time scrap my current project because I decided it sounds like shit. Can't help you tho, for me, it's just an addiction to start making some stuff even when I know that 98% of it never gets finished.
Re: How to get motivated/excited about production again?
I know people do it for a living, but I really can't imagine sitting down to a computer and writing DJ friendly (read as: very same-y) tracks in the same genre (read as: very same-y) every day and working entirely by yourself at that (maybe a collab would help). I'm not knocking dance music, but lets be honest in a lot of ways you are really just repeating the same process over and over and going back to the same tropes over and over as well.
I'm not sure I know how to keep that fresh, let alone fresh and coming up with ideas worth finishing. People do it though.
I dislike DAWs in many ways, you sit down and smack there is the intimidation of the whole process right there in front of you. It's is quite like sitting down to do some writing with your word processor with the intimidation of that empty page and that damn blinking cursor. With a hardware synth I flip on a switch and within seconds I'm designing a patch or writing a chord progression, a melody or designing a sound. Maybe all three at the same time. Then when I'm ready I can fire up the old DAW and start recording audio and MIDI while totally ignoring the computer.
Much more organic, for me, than load up DAW, audition samples, load synth, this, that, the other thing I always do. Seems very boxed in and limiting even though the DAW is a sweet ass audio playground. Its like this awful prison at the same time.

Lots can help. Take a lsd or mushy trip and listen to some music. Fuckin makes me want to make shit everytime. Ive always thought to myself, if someone else can make sounds that make me want to slap someone, then so can I. That alone pushes me to work harder.
Perhaps your skills with producing arent where you want them to be, hindering what you actually want to make. I personally am having a better time working with sounds that I actually want to make rather with ok sounds and making a pattern out of ok shit. Sign up for tutorials, bassgorilla, warped academy....anything to help your skills improve. I can only imagine how fun producing is for someone like Skrillex who knows how to make any sound he wants (or so he says haha).
Even finding new music that you love is inspiring enough.
Like someone said earlier, try making a different kind of music. Play an instrument. When I get tired of producing, I drum. and Vice Versa.
Blaze lots of weed
Never give up homie. If you really really really want to make some bad ass sounds, then you will. If not, thats cool too.

lol whats wrong with liking drugs? I'm sure you like to drink so quit judging and quit acting like 12 year old pussies
Re: How to get motivated/excited about production again?
It seems I got it all wrong, my bad. I thought that you get motivated FIRST, THEN you start doing drugs so you can fuck up your life like all cool people (Kurt Cobain etc.).
Re: How to get motivated/excited about production again?
I personally don't care if you wanna smoke rock or shoot cocaine directly into your penis...but honestly 99% of the time drugs are just distraction.

Just stop making music for a bit..
You're just probably bummed out from monotony. These days I seem to work on 9 month cycles.
For 3 months of the year I fucking hate music, I hate making it, listening to it, knowing that it exists.
For 9 months of the year I live, sleep, breath and shit it.
Breaks are good yo.
Being creative shouldn't be hard or an effort.. You're not being creative when it is, you're trying to do something creatively by using your knowledge and technical expertise of how to achieve the ideas you have.
Completely different.
