Jack U Snare

I'm trying to figure out a way to synthesize a sound like the snare in a lot of Jack U songs:

it sounds like a really thick clave or something like that.

The Jack U snare sounds a LOT like this EPROM snare too.

Any ideas of where to start?

No idea tbh, it might be the same sample in both songs, just processed and pitched differently. Anyways, if you were to make it from a scratch, to me it sounds like there's 2 different hits in that snare, other one being dragged off the grid.

sounds like a thick rim shot to me that would be a good way to start, than just process it with some effects (it could also be fm8 since skrillex uses fm8 for his "real" snares)

Thats funny...the Jack U one sounds like the reverse of the Eprom one. Eprom has a dunk-click and then Jack U has a click-Dunk but just at a higher pitch. Agu is right though...I think it sounds like the same sample just pitched up.

Try VEC2 Percussion 11 pitched up 5 semi tones and compressed like hell for Eprom and then 13 semitones plus a little up for Jack U with a little extra verb....or...sample this biznatch.... It is close enough.

it sounds to me a bit like 909 snare pitched up, compressed as fuck, layered with one more sample

Skrillex has said time and time again that what he's most proud of, are his drums. I saw a radio station do an interview with him and diplo before their album released, and diplo was just gushing on and on about the snare in "take U there"....Skrillex went on to divulge basic tid bits about how he makes them, just as he's done in MANY interviews and Q&As before; He layers usually 3 samples, one for the attack, one for the body, and one for the tail....It's pointless trying to recreate that particular one, even for educational sake because god knows which particular samples he chose, let alone how he processed them.

There is no right or wrong sample to choose for either 3 of the composition of designing the snare....Ever since trap and this 150 bpm stuff started taking off, I've heard a SHIT TON of different layered sounds to create a whole percussive hit. Sky is the limit friend.

I've read few of these interviews in the past, back when everybody were excited about his 200Hz snares and so on.

Def not the same sample. The base layer of the sample sounds like an 808 without the noise osc pitched up a little. The other bits are probs a clave or an even more pitched up one. These will all be bussed together AMD compressed, distorted and eq etc.
