Cubase Vs Logic

Post by nuravehitcher » Tue Dec 11, 2007 5:14 am

About to make my first move into the non-pirate software scene. I've saved up enough cash to make my first serious purchase. I was originally planning on Cubase SX3, but now Apple have slashed the price of Logic and added new content, makes me wonder which i should be going for.

All my experience (not much) is with Cubase VST 5 when I was doing music tech at college but whichever program i decide to use, i'm going to be starting at the bottom.

I have a Macbook so thats the first tick box covered as far as Logic is concerned.

So..... which do I go for?

Heh heh. Logic users have strong opinions about it. It's worth it for value alone - Not so long ago, a bunch of us paid what, $1000 for this software, now it's half that price. You get so much in the Studio box. The soft synths, the plugins. Lots of good stuff.

The layout is now way more, erm, Logical. I think the learning curve is slowly dropping, which was one of Logic's only crits for a long time.

What I'm seeing in a lot of big studios now is that Logic is starting to become pretty much standard, after Pro Tools. A lot of them are hiring Logic experts around LA. This was unheard of a few years ago. People are realising that they can run Logic and some nice DSP plugs and get results approaching that of an HD rig, but at a fraction of the price.

:)

Another thing to bear in mind is that Apple make the OS, the hardware and the software. This is the next best thing to running synth hardware. everything plays nicely and is stable. Save up for a nice Apogee audio i/o (Apogee is in bed with Apple, too!) and you'll have a great system.

It's win, win.

Haha, I used to use VST 5 back in the day. I use SE3 now... well I will do when it actually fucking arrives.

yeah, good advice.

runnin Logic8 with an apogee duet, and well happy.

especially after years of strugglin on an old PPC with zero RAM and Logic6 with no preamp and a faulty xskey that fucked me over every 5 minutes.

havent used cubase since it was on atari tho, so cant really give any comparative advice. but got absolutely no complaints with Logic (apart from the above mentioned lack of logic).

I guess people on cubase will probably tell u the same thing about their prefered DAW too tho.

but the fact u r already on mac IMO means there's no doubt about which u shud go for.

Have been using both recently - Logic at home and Cubase at a colleagues house.

Logic everytime. The bundled plugins and instruments are really slick. any upsets that I had about not being able to use the windows plugins I used have now diminished.

Awesomeness.

I'd just stick with Logic for now. I personally think Massive is a massive waste of CPU.

Besides, you can layer things in Logic for big welly by selecting two or more input channels, inserting different synths on each of them and pressing a few keys.
