photo ethics.

Post by reverendmedia » Wed Dec 26, 2007 7:59 pm

Alright

Hope you lot had a good Christmas.

I just read the dubstep ethics post and so it is with (slight) regret that I bring this up, but...

I've done some surfing in the last few days (nothing on telly), and I've come across some of my work on flyers and on myspaces etc.

I must say that I'm flattered and chuffed.

But please, just say who you got them from. It doesn't take much. All my contact details are on the forum underneath every single one of my posts.

None of my shit is for profit (one day maybe...), and because I shoot on film, I run at a (quite considerable  ) loss. All I ask for is a bit of recognition.

(I know I should do what ash does and watermark the photties, but, you know, just want to have the best possible picture on display for the forum...)

To those that have contacted me and asked - your chest.

To those that haven't - you know who you are - shame on you.

Thanks for your time.

I should watermark mine but its long, a credit would be nice but tbh I put them on the internet and on here I expect them to be used as and when. I love finding artists using them on myspace/facebook and if someone makes money out if using them when I'm not then serves me right for being lazy and not doing low res + watermark. I actually only take the pictures to share them on here anyway so Im not really losing out at all.

I too have often seen our photographer's work being used without consideration on flyers worldwide. I was able to have one magazine print an apology and credit but cannot run after everyone in this digital age.

I agree fully with reverendmedia - photographers are creatives and photos are their canvas - they should be respected as such.

Same thing happened with my missus found one of her photos on a flyer for a hardcore night up north. Should be pushing for cash imo its a copyright infringement. They are making money indirectly from your photo.

photos are harder to protect than music.. but the watermark can at least make sure you always get credit.

There will always be someone willing to rip you off at any chance they get. Atleast if you watermark them the people who want to use it can ask you for the originals! That way stnuc dont get to use them but polite, kind and considerate people do!

Also remember to leave all your metadata in your files, especially contact and "all rights reserved" info.

when you see your work used online somewhere without permission, screenshot the site and download a web archive of the page in question. these days you can contact the hosting company directly at their abuse email and have sites shut down over usage infringement. in fact, i have a good designer friend that succeeded in getting a blog un-hosted, by simply contacting the hosting instead of even talking to the site owner. if people are going to abuse your rights, then there's absolutely no reason why you have to give them common courtesy back. just go straight to the hosting company and take it from there. this is all assuming that you've officially copyrighted your pics.

in most countries that matter, copyright is automatic and licensing is not, so you're at all rights reserved by default. you need an explicit license grant on top of that for others to use it.
