Dubstep DJ sets mixed on Ableton?

Post by citizen » Sun Jan 13, 2008 4:06 pm

I'm just curious to see if there is much of this happening. I know a few producers present their material using Live, but what about those who use it purely to play other people's music.

(obviously not a popular option, given the die-hard vinyl mentality that is part of the dubstep ethos)

I've heard one or two sets, but to my mind they didn't reallly expand greatly upon what can be acheived with turntables alone.

Any impressive examples?

I've been doing this quite a bit, theres a few of my mixes on the forum. I've finally bought a laptop & traktor though so going to start using those eventually.

Im a vinyl junkie as much as the next man
but its too expensive for me to keep up
its hit and miss for me with CDJs
..and I dont trust Serato (was about to invest in this then saw a serato set that went horribly wrong) sure the same technical issues could arise with ableton in most cases but....
I would much rather spend time producing my own tunes than spending hours and hours practicing on my decks to make my beatmatching etc extraordinary.
Been using ableton for years, its intuitive and allows for endless possibilites + plus you can switch seamlessly into a live set of your own tunes.

+ despite what many purists say it aint always so easy to warp some of your tunes

people are more forgiving of a dodgy mix than they are of a dodgy tune selection... and it is my tune selection that I want people to take note of.

heres a mix i put together while i was away from my tables out of the country recently. i had previously digitally archived most of my tracks to play using serato, so warping and messing about in ableton was pretty easy. its my first digital mix, so i tried not to go overboard with edits, but there definitely are a few to spot if youre keen on it
lemme know what you think.

Not to start a whole nother Serato vs whatever thread, but seriously, Serato is way better than traktor. I would suggest trying them both out before investing, especially if you are a vinyl person to start with. Ive been using it for over two years now and Ive only ever had one problem and that was due to the turntable being wired backwards after a repair (the turntables outputs got switched causeing serato to play tracks backwards, easily fixed by reversing the outputs going into the box) Traktors vinyl control has some catching up to do...

Ive done all ableton sets before, but unless youre doing crazy edits and pitch shifting, I dont see the point. Id personally rather do it with turntables. It can be super fun to do crazy multi genre mashup sets with ableton, and for a live loop-based performance its really fun and easy (once you get the loops made that is)

as far as what you can do with ableton as opposed to turntables: i have been working the decks (3 decks as much as possible) playing techno for 13 years now, and made the decision to use ableton for dubstep/dubstep & techno hybrids because it expands on a) what tunes i can use (you can't beatmatch 130 bpm techno with 140 bpm dubstep on decks, but i sure can with ableton), b) the creative license it gives me (efx, looping, sampling bits from tunes, massive eq cuts), c) the ability to do rearrangements of tunes on the fly, d) playing more tunes and more layers of tunes to allow for texturing and sound exploration, and e) damn it's lighter than my record box!

i started using ableton because i wanted more control over how the music was being played and more control over sound sculpturing. coming from techno, where layering and texture are a huge part of the mix, it just made sense to me to have more options.

truthfully, i am throroughly enjoying myself in the process. i have to prepare all my tunes, which means by the end of that process, i know my tunes inside out. i get to really dig into the songs and the composition and play with it much more than i could with turntables. and i have a lot of fun tweaking sounds!

i use my midi controller (uc 33) like a mixing board and just wack upfaders around all day. it's fun!

for examples, do a quick search for "shiva" in the mixes section of the forum or peep my latest studio mix (techno/dubstep hybrid, live mixed, no prearrangement).
Here, have a free tune:
