All of them are good for Dubstep, you can do any type of music you wish in them.

I have Cubase SE3 which was £99 but it a little scaled down, like you can only have 5 insert effects per audio channel and 2 send effects per channel, or summit like that but it dose what I want it to do and more.
Reach for the lasers, save as fuck.

theres been tons of threads like this
so in short................

fruity loops /cubase - both fine

abelton live - if you are working with samples get this

reason - good but its biggest strength is its biggest weakness, its all-in-one. which means no external plug-ins and it can't record audio (although you can record audio elsewhere then bring it into reason)

pro tools - no.

If youre a complete beginner, start on fruity loops. Get through the month-long phase where youre completely baffled, look at tutorials on youtube and stuff and you can more or less do anything you want in a few months. When you find youre being limited, i havent got there yet, but if you do, a lot of people move on to logic/cubase.

i think anything will do. try a few and see if any just click with you.

try and stick with one mind you. i fell in love with both ableton live and renoise, both totally different tools but capable of making a tune (in much the same way as anything else imo) and now it's :? every time i sit at my computer.

Reaper and EnergyXT are both worth a look at the price ($50 and 49 Euros respectively). The current version of XT still seems to be a bit short of where it wants to be, but it's very promising. I've not used Reaper, but it's by the guy who wrote Winamp, it's getting a lot of props and he seems to be adding new features pretty much every week...

Just give any of them time and they will do what you want,

i would ask though, whats your experience with computer music generally? if you're a complete beginner, easiest and most fun to learn out of the above would be reason (i've never used FL) very quick easy workflow...i don't use reason (anymore) but it certainly helped me learn the basics of synthesis, computer music and editing/sequencing, AFAIK Reason 4 (and 3) doesn't allow you to record Audio-in. i think after some time with reason you'll understand it's limits and know where you should then be throwing your money at, or you may just find it to be all you need. (try the demo?)

why not try some freeware sequencers, which allow VST's? might help in your decision making. i'd post some links to some, but can't be bothered to search at the moment (wiki does have a list of all free audio apps somewhere)

BTW, Pro-tools is software and audio interface (we, my band that is, use it all the time) and i'd say it's a bit much really for this sort of thing, depends what you have in mind...it's great for recording bands (multitrack live recordings) i wouldn't go out of my way for it for much else though...as great as it is.
