birmingham heads... lets get it sorted!

Post by Elkie » Sun Jan 27, 2008 11:24 am

yeah, there seems to be no regular dubstep night going on anywhere in brum...

so like, a couple of us are thinking about getting one sorted!

would anyone be up for playing there if we did get it sorted?
or even just coming along to it?

seems mad that the second biggest city in the uk has next to nothing in the way of a dubstep scene...

so yeah, brum people, what do you think?

It's a mess!
Seriously, went to mediate last week and it was a quality night, although the system sounded shit at first it got sorted, but for the line up where was everyone... Loefah, Slimzee, Jakes, Chef.... about 150 people! 5 people in the room when slim played...... JOKE!
then this week i find out Youngsta played at Custard factory the saturday just gone.... and there was no promo that i saw, and i look pretty hard!
Promoter in brum need to get their shit together and realise Facebook is a terrible form of promotion.... print flyers and fly post everywhere because otherwise shit like this happens! I barely saw any promo for mediate either.... just stumbled across a flyer in tempest one week... then nothing for 2 weeks!
it's a shame because the venues are good!
sorry to rant but c'mon.... in the past 4 years i'm always disappointed compared to say leeds, manchester, or any other major city!

My point exactly!
apparently at the Custard Factory... from what i can gather it was a huge festival with a load of indie band pricks like the wombats playing.... so he was low down on the bill and not pushed at all..... still i'm angry about this!

Banga & Caspa played at the same night. Regular Dubstep night starting on 20th November @ Custard Factory with Dubstep in the Med Bar. Not so big a lineup at first but we are building it up nicely. Dubstep needed to be in the Med Bar regularly a long time ago. Check out the first night on the 20th November here - http://www.dubstepforum.com/sub-mission ... 08426.html

5,000 flyers and posters being printed and ads in all the local papers etc etc

Hopefully if the first one goes well we can carry it on with bigger and better lineups.

I promote in Birmingham, have been promoting for about 12 years now. The problem is that when you put everything into your night, all your energy, all your money, and STILL people don't turn up it kinda makes you think, "Fuck this!"

but still we try...so next thursday Im starting a new fortnightly dubstep night along with my co-promoter, Roskoe, called Dubstation Live (we co-present a Dubstep show called Dubstation every wednesday night 10pm-midnight on http://www.rhubarbradio.com), It's at Soundbar on Corporation street and is FREE entry 9pm-2am. We will put on local dubstep DJs and have occassional guests, for instance on 3rd December we have our mate BORGORE performing!

This night alternates with Dubmatic, which takes place on fortnightly thursdays at The Rainbow. So there you have it, there is a Dubstep night every single thursday in Birmingham. it remains to be seen how many people love Dubstep and will attend regular Dubstep nights...or is it a case of people loving to see BIG Dubstep names and blatantly not giving a fuck about the Dubstep scene. Only time will tell

and I used to promote a night called MyBass at Custard Factory too which was pure Dubstep so, No, Submission is definitely not the first, not by a long chalk

The problem with Birmingham in my opinion is lack of varitey, pretty much every night is jump up. Dont get me wrong that is what it is, but the darker and deeper side is missing and when names like Loefah, Youngsta, Mala etc on the odd occasion appear in Brum, the nights should be heaving, but never are.

Big ups to everyone doing there thing, i mean no disrespect by this, its just i feel a large part of the dubstep sound is missing in Birmingham. Trying to get something organised though, so watch this space.

With regards to Youngsta on saturday, i went pretty much just to see him on Valve, but he played at 8-9... 8-9!!!! fucking joke, was well pissed off.

(on a side note, check out my show tonight on afterdarkradio.info 10-12  )

^^^ this ^^^

played in birmingham a few times now & i find exactly the same thing. I do like all the jump up things but i prefer to play the deeper & darker stuff: kryptic minds, headhunter, sp:mc etc in my dj sets.

although when I go to play in Birmingham I fill my box differently: subscape, emalkay etc etc.

For instance the last time i played at custard factory i started nice & chilled, after 5 mins I had people comin over with messages on there phones sayin "want filth" & "bangers"

I know djing is about pleasing the crowd, but to me it is also about educating them about new things/sounds that arnt the 'norm'

oh well... i'll just keep trying and if they dont like it bangers they will have!!!!

at least there are people in Brumtown who do now know what Dubstep is! I recall playing the second room at Breakthru on many occassions to an empty room. DnB heads would pop over because they could see the bar was empty making it easier for them to get served. They'd come in and I could see them stood at the bar slowly being drawn into it, saying to each other "What the fuck is this?", sometimes actually staying for a listen.........i really hope that 2009-2010 is a good, no, a great year for Dubstep in Brumtown

and wednesday night Joker is playing at Custard Factory for anyone that doesn't know yet. At a night called "BRUM"....so come show support

And where has the promo been...... nowhere that i've seen!

I agree that there needs to be more of the darker and deeper stuff..... too much jump up in brum.
I remember 5 years ago seeing milanese (who is from Brum!) and that was a great night.. wanted to put a line up on that had this kind of vibe with it.
Ideally Yunx, mala, pinch..... thing is i ain't around too much to put full effort and make it work out so there's no point.

I appreciate that it's hard to start a night but i don't think putting 5 support DJs on one bill is helping anyone, you're gonna get minimum attendance and possibly loose money..... you need the good combo of popular and forward pushing DJs. I know this will get mis-interpreted but i agree that the smaller support DJ does not space to play but when i see a flyer for an event with 5 DJs i never heard of, then it gets binned. You need to invest money to make money/make a scene and keep it going.

sorry to sound like a C@nT but it's just simple business knowledge in a city as big as Brum.

PS why are you booking Bogore.... that mustn't be cheap and you're 100% going to loose money?

if you wanted to book mala pinch and youngsta your looking at silly money. 5 support DJ's and one headliner is perfectly fine aslong as the support DJ's are good and there selection fits the sort of night you want. You should show your support for the local guys.

The problem is the darker and deeper side has never really been pushed in birmingham so its going to take a while to build up a support base, going in splashing the cash on lots of big headliners on your first night is a huge risk that will probally bite you on the arse. These things take time and especially with money being so tight at the moment, who can really afford to take that kind of risk?

Im getting the ball rolling on a night, currently looking at venues and got a headliner in mind, this will be pure dark and deep vibes, watch this space...
