Here we go:
With a very diversified album that represents what is interesting on Dubstep today, Cyrus is gaining space and attracting enthusiasts of the low frequencies of the sound spectrum. The asset of this big producer from Croydon, United Kingdom is the simplicity of his productions.
The economy of percussion elements makes Cyrus an extremely creative producer. A good sound system can show what his music is capable doing. His real power it’s on the vibrations, the weight of the silent transmits that makes the entrails turn upside down, an outstanding characteristic from Jamaican culture.
Your album From The Shadows (CD, Tectonic) brings “Indian Stomp”, track used on the soundtrack of the movie Children Of Man (2006), from the Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón.
Check the interview with Cyrus and listen to the exclusive mix at Tranquera.
You are from Croydon, right? How this influences your music?
Croydon is dark and dreary, maybe it explain the question.
How is your relationship with the others producers from the area?
We are ten minutes each others by car. Sometimes we share experiences but I wouldn’t say that is a competition.
You cut dubplates. Is it everything done on Transition?
I always cut my dubplates on Transition. Was the first one I meet and it’s the most close from here. I went there once to cut an UK Garage track and returned.
Why the producers prefer dubplates than CDs or digital files?
Lots of DJs of Dubstep are now using CDs. Particularly I prefer vinil because the sound is hotter. You know the difference when the guy is playing with CD or vinil. The sound of CD is clean and sharp. But I’m not against who uses CD.
Is vinil essential for Dubstep?
I don’t think it’s essential but Dubstep is making you feel the low frequencies and this is easier using a dubplate or a vinil.
How do you see the scene today?
The scene is very healthy at the moment and is also growing. I think it’s important the people came with their own sounds.
How you make your productions? What do you use for it?
I’ve been using Cubase at the last months but I used Reason and Fruity Loops. I have a pair of Tannoy Reveal monitors and a M-Audio keyboard.
How is the work of an independent label as yours?
Random Trio Productions it’s a label for our sounds only, so that’s not stressing. I haven’t released all that I would like to, or that I should. I hold to release with other labels. But 2008 will be different.
Your productions are minimalists, with few elements. This is intentional?
In a way yes. I think a lot about this. I like to insert a texture in the background, with some atmosphere running through it. Then I insert pure subgrave and that makes it feel very minimalist.
Your sound is not like the others. In your opinion, what makes it unique?
I don’t know, maybe the structure, the mixdown. I think its important being original. Is easy copying the others style to make a nice track.
How you mixed this set? Some digital file and dubplate?
Both.
When are these dubplates being released?
At any moment. Some ones are already released and two of them – “Corruption” and “Whispers” – are at the next vinyl of Random Trio Productions.
