ive got a macbook which is on osx
and just wondering which is the best software for me to mess about with
create some basic stuff and go on from there?

Ah tis true this question has been asked many times! And no doubt you will get several different answers. You will ofcourse already have garage band as it comes pre installed on the macbook, so you can always play around with that. Or get torrenting, cubase is a great option, so is logic, reason is ok .

i think reason is the best, if u havent got a midi load an init patch into malstrom and mess around makin sum dutty bass noises, u can make sum powerful shit wid dat.

i'd say, if you are really just starting out with computers and music... stick with reason for a bit... its nice cause its got everything in one package, and doesnt get too confusing, plus lots of tutorials based on reason... once you feel you start to outgrow it, my favorite is ableton.... but no sense in wasting a lot of time with logic if you dont understand anything... plus a lot of things in reason, synthesis, sequencing, etc... will translate to most other applications

I agree with the others that reason is a good package to learn on, but you would be best advised to use logic from the start, it is a much more powerful sequencer and has everything you need plus a lot more, sure it has a steeper learning curve, but it's worth it. Of course through rewire you can use both!

I've got a mac powerbook laptop, the new intel ones are pretty good bases for a software studio. Nice and portable.

1st off if your on 10.5 OSX Leopard, I'd suggest you downgrade to 10.4.
A good few software company's haven't released solid enough Leopard fixes yet. I upgraded, tried to re-install all of my software, to find that I couldn't use half of it.

I'm running Logic Pro 8 with Reason 3 as a rewire, they both work in sync so you can mix all the Reason channels in Logic. I find some of the sounds you can create in Reason too good to ignore. Also ReDrum is a great drum machine which logic lacks. I also use Native Instruments Massive Synth as a audio unit plugin for Logic.

With that your pretty much good to go. All downloadable if your into torrents n that shizzle.
