The mighty mighty rolling breakstep thread
The mighty mighty rolling breakstep thread
Aint no half stepping, just the latest cut up, glitched out, rolling breakstep beats in the classic storming styles, if you please.
I'm talking new reso, threnody, elemental, boxcutter, protocol x, darqwan, search and destroy etc etc
You get the drift ?
LETS FOOKING AVE IT !

As for music Threnody - Sound is out now on Rottun
http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t ... t=thren%2A
New King Cannibal on Rag & Bone is well worth checking too.
Lots of diverse and different producers messing with the breaks at the moment and there is some real creativity within this sound.

Oyaarss is going on a breaky tip quite often....His productions are on another level. http://www.virb.com/oyaarss
I'm also really feeling Redline, Coleco, Paradigm X, Hit By A Rock, Sully on the breakstep tip. No doubt others that i've forgotten....Blackmass for example!

The Elemental tune that just came out on Urban Graffiti, "Shiner" is one of my favorite breakstep tunes ever.
Also Threnody has been playing a new tune of his on this breaky tip called "What we can do" (or something similar) which is brilliant
Also, the Urban Graffiti crew have been playing lately a tune by H.O.D. called "Indecisions" (that I think it was made 4 years ago
) which is absolutely sick!
We need Search & Destroy back though
Oh, and big up the breakstep.net kru!

So how about an all time top tunes and history lesson, first breakstep tune, early players and labels that sort of thing ?
By no means definitive but heres a condensed view of how I saw it. Feel free to add and maybe from this we can update the woeful defintion that wiki has.
Sometime and somewhere along the line 'breakbeat garage' and '4x4 garage' as pioneered by zed bias, darqwan, deekline, narrows maybe even stanton warriors became 'breakstep', with producers like quest and mutiny and ed 209 among others veering off from established breaks ala nu skool to produce a less flashy, less fully syncopated, harder yet simpler type of breakbeat sound replete with oft used 'techstep' style basslines, albeit slowed down from the breakneck tempos of d'n'b to a more sedate 140bpm. They would probably argue, and rightly so given they were making the beats, that it was 'tearout' or 'bassline breaks' they were making but whats in a name, right ?:D Usually sans melodic vocals yet incorporating 'dark" vocal samples characterised breakstep apart from the feminine pressure and hiphop remixes of garage and nuskool, but don't ever say it is just slowed down drum and bass. As we all know d'n'b is just sped up breaks

Labels like rat, hardcore beats and cyberfunk pushed the sound forward almost to dead end leaving no room to manouver except to soften their sound and make it more palatable with the traditional breaks and progressive house DJ's.
Just when you thought things couldn't get any harder and softer, a host of new players erupt on the scene. Taking cues from the glitchy production styles of si begg and tipper, 'storming productions' and 'hotflush recordings', the flagship labels for search and destroy and toastyboy among others caused quite a furore. Were they dubstep or were they breakstep ? MRK1, a protege of darqwans stood as tall as any in this camp and whose contribution to not only dubstep but the convergence of breakstep and grime cannot be overlooked.
Fast forward and in looking to the future, look no further than eclectic labels 'rag'n bone' and 'combat recordings' to lead the way. Long a source of emerging and established talent whose sound have more than a fair share of hard and heavy glitched out breaks with a step to their rhythm.
Rewind and in honouring the past, breakstep history would not be complete without mentioning 'ammuntion productions' which was always at the forefront of the developing sounds of breakstep and early dubstep via the now legendary 'forward' night and a raft of influential labels such as shelflife, bingo, road, vehicle, texture and soulja.
My all time top 6
like sun/the knowledge - toasty
brood - boxcutter
screwheads - protocol x
soulfire - elemental
lion - vex'd
Lastly are there any recent solid and solely breakstep mixes around someone might point me in the direction of ?
