Burial is a genius.

Post by utopian » Tue Apr 01, 2008 10:55 pm

He is actually a musical genius.

This isn't just a throwaway comment about how great he is. I've always tried to avoid over-using words like that, and I've probably never said that about any musician before even though, of course, there are others out there.

But seriously, I could go on forever but for now I'll just mention the sheer attention to detail in his music. Put a pair of headphones on, and listen to something like 'Pirates' or even something seemingly straightforward like 'South London Boroughs'. I hear new stuff every time I listen to his tunes.

And best of all for me, normally when I really love someone's tunes, I make an almost conscious effort not to overplay the tracks, as if I have to restrict myself from listening to it too much. And yet I find myself playing his stuff a lot, and it stays special.

Oh yeah, and while I'm at it..those vocals on the end of Shell of Light are brilliant. It sounds like an old motown vocal.

If only he could turn his genius towards the free energy question.

Listening to it properly = The answer! :D

Whack some headphones on, have it a nice volume, possibly chill it back on bed in the dark or something similar and really listen to it, dont just hear it. (To quote boomnoise...)

If you dont get it then...youre just not looking for the same thing out of music as me!

dunno, i hate female vocals, which burial seems to use a lot of.
also, his stuff sounds 'urban' (bad word i know) in a kind of way that doesn't seem relevant to me in rural cornwall.
not urban in the sense of grime/shooting people, but his music sounds like a city to me and i hate cities...

each to their own though, i can appreciate he is a good producer too...i just don't see what all the fuss is about.

I dunno, just something about the 2 albums that conjures up really different pictures/feelings to me, despite the same use of things like record crackle/hissing or the drum sounds or whatever...

Edit: Just realised thats just me rewording my last post...im going to bed before the prk award comes any closer my way

I thought the same, especially about 'Untrue'. But then I thought, hell, it got such an extraordinary reviews (from places I do respect ;)) I should give it another chance. I listened to it few times and with every listen I liked it more and more. (I would ditch some vocals too, but I've grown to accept them :P Also, the first album is still my favourite)
