Mastering Metal!!

Post by future producer » Sat Apr 05, 2008 9:28 pm

My mate has asked if I could master some Nu/Death Metal stuff but I dunno really if techniques differ to much from mastering electronic stuff.

Not quite Dubstep related but still, just looking for advice!!

depends on the 'type' of electronic music
you will have to be careful with your compression because the guitar sounds will already be very 'flat' (dynamically) because the extreme amounts of distortion also compress the signal
but then the drums may be very dynamic

just look for giving it an overall even tone and dont compress as much as you would with an acoustic song for instance

thats my advice =)

less low-end overall; metal is all about the midrange brutality. if your kicks have a ton of 30hz in them with 16th notes at 220bpm, it'll be a mess!

also pray to god that whoever's mixing the project has a clue about metal aesthetics...

Ok cheers, I'll visit Soundclick and see if I can download some Metal tunes that haven't been mastered that well and have a go and doing something with it.

No point in downloading mp3's to master, waste of time. Look for a book by Bob Katz on mastering, read and learn. But also remember it's a black art! You need really good reference monitors, really good! You also need good ears! Mastering isn't about the tools, it's about the engineer working those tools.
It moves you!

try to listen to modern overproduced metal like for example the last Caliban !

the kick is way higher than in electronic music (no sub also)
Use long attack compression for kick and snare
