so here's a tune
I've been flamed on this forum for having a go at producers who are tight arsed and dubplate and don't make tunes available for download because they shit themselves at first sight of a filesharing program.
So here is the beginnnings of a tune I'm knocking together using ableton, I'd be grateful if you could give it a crit.
big bottom
This tune and it's component samples, when finished, will be available under a creative commons sampling plus license, which basically means you can rip it, sample it, copy it, give it to your mates, or stick it up your ass, as long as you don't make any money out of it.

ok you talkative motherfuckas, by popular demand, this is what that little sample turned into, still to add some vocal samples and atmospherics.

well you need to have more going on in this. and i think there could be a alot more going on with the beats. ok it picks up more towards the end. i think that that sparse intro is too long. if you want to be making dubstep, some generic rules to follow are:
-make it 138 - 145 bpm
-have a deep rumbling subbass noise
-it needs to sound less drum and bassy. think about that other kinds of sounds that used in dubstep that are not drum and bass.
-the differant parts you have in this song do not warrent how long it is. maybe this would have been OK for DnB/Jungle, but with dubstep i think you have to step it up a notch. the longest that you should have something repeat is 8 bars.
these are just rules that i thought up off of the top of my head. they might sound a little superficial, but whatev.

my girls got 'em.
Bit sparse, and bit clippy in the bass department.
Quite like the DnB style drums bit tho.
Overall, could do with some more melodic bits, and some wider hi end sounds and stuff, and a bit more changeability (?! too many businessspeak meetings...).

I'm going to try to tidy the bass up and add more detail.
Any tips with the bass? I was trying to get an overdriven vex'd sound, and I realise now it's a bit more complex than sticking a saturation filter and mighty compression... it needs to roll as diana says, what's that done with... filters and envelopes?

...let's hear one of your tunes with all that stuff you're on about in it
basically i like what you're trying to do twiggy, but it sounds more like you're trying to clone vex'd using sounds straight outta the can...
...value the difference and the diversity in the sound and try nailing your own. There are no rules just keep tweaking it til u think it's finished and only put it up when you're happy for it to be ripped apart, consumed digested and shat back out again by the general public
nobody wants to hear just the beginnings of a tune or something you just started...

DUBMUGGA - can you not get your point across in a little less of an aggressive way?
And actually I DO want hear the neginning s of a tune, to hear him evolve it and take it forward, and maybe if WE can, help him with it?
Anyway. Andy, the main bass sound is too lifeless, especially for the arrangement, think about things like automated filtering over that sound to make it change and catch the ear throughout the tune. I personally quite like the breaks. But they do feel sparse at first because of the basicness of the bass sound. Once the break gets rolling with all the retriggering it actually sounds pretty cool, but again somewhat let down by that main sound. Personally I would really work that synth, layer it, resample, really make it an exciting addictive sound.

Good idea. My dog has been having a wee go with fruity studio, and has come up with some good ideas. They need some direction, and sometimes some cleaning up, but hey, who doesn't. He certainly has some time on his hands. i don't know how new you are to the scene, but maybe go back and listen to some early stuff from a couple of years ago to see where the sound came from and follow it through from there instead of starting from scratch in the here and now
