You ask for a cheaper (not quicker) alternative for a professional mastering. The cheapest way would be learning it yourself, because this knowledge would improve your skills as a producer a lot.

You could also get Ozone (or any other mastering suite) and do their tutorials (http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/ozone/guides.html). Compared to the above its faster and leads to good results, too.

With mastering its the same as with everything else: You can buy guaranteed quality, make a bargain or get a lot of crap for a lot of money.

But nonetheless its important that your stuff gets a proper mastering. What sounds good in your studio or on your stereo can be a nightmare in the club.

and like anything else, it depends upon the mastering engineer. i've had mixes come back great, i've had them come back too bassy (YES. TOO BASSY-- things become mud on a system), overcompressed, undercompressed, too loud, not loud enough, and everything in between.

2 schools of thought: if you're confident in your mixing (ie, you've mixed stuff before for relase and your mixes, in your mind, stand up to mastered CD's), then go balls out and send the mastering engineer a mix that you think needs no mastering. If you're good, then they really won't do much at all.

if, on the other hand, you're not confident in your mixing, then mix it so that it sounds full, powerful, balanced, and maybe a bit quiet and keep your peaks under 0dbFS. some say -3, some say -6... just stay away from anything goin above 0. don't put anything on the master buss, and go easy on eq and compression in general.

lemme put it this way i used a british dnb mastering house for some laquers (well known dnb one)like 2 or the 3 masters and am sending off unhappy tune to master via macc soon to remaster then recut

yeah, had stuff done just for CD. i know its supposed 2b less tricky, but seemed 2b just as much work as for vinyl 2b honest. been more than happy with results so far. dont know what it cost tho cos i wasnt paying.

not really sure what u r asking really. if u r releasing a CD then get mastered for CD, if u r gonna release vinyl then get mastered for vinyl. but master either way. wouldnt consider releasing my stuff unmastered if thats what u thinking
