NY Dubstep / Jungle Party Proposition...

Post by jess_is_not_ok » Fri Apr 25, 2008 7:53 am

curious to see the board's reaction to an idea i have... there is a huge divide (whether we like to admit or not) between nyc's jungle scene (the little scene that is left) and nyc's blossoming dubstep scene. can we bridge these two cultures with a few good parties where 2 headliners play, one dubstep one jungle? the goal is to unify the two and expose each genre's itch. it may seem very simple to non-americans - most of you, specifically uk heads, started off in the jungle or garage scene, but in ny, dubstep has taken off completely on its own... which makes me sad.

down for a proper merger? yay or nay. ideas to make this more feasible?? feedback is much appreciated.
you dont wana see me get eeeevil...

Dunno... dubstep usually likes to stick to its own thing.

in my city, dubstep is not big or huge or even growing just a likkle...People barely even admit to it. Its like all the DJs here will admit it one on one, but not too much in front of other people. Closetted dubsteppers and wat not..

so if I hear dubstep at all in my town, its usually linked with another genre. They did dubstep/dnb but it works a lot better with a jungle/dubstep night.

And if it weren't for one of those jungle/dubstep nights, I'da never heard, fallen in love with, and been completely entranced by dubstep. I think its a good idea. Besides....its not like jungles not losin' members to dubstep in the regular.

I love jungle. Always will. But dubstep (tho its old to UK heads) is barely even a whisper where I am and if we even had just a night with locals to hook up with regularly and go see rinse out, I think a lot more people would come and catch the fever.

konkrete jungle has dubstep.

we've had SUV @ Sub Swara playing jungle on a night where there was tons of dubstep in the mix. In general i can 't think of night where we didn't touch on both for at least 10 tunes each.

The sometimes-happening takeover nights @ love have Sub Swara vs. Dub War vs. Trouble & Bass vs. Secret Night of Science. Guaranteed to hear dubstep and jungle (and house, and grime, and techno, and acid, and d&b, and dancehall and...)

Seoul from Direct Drive is one of the biggest dubstep proponents in the City. The vibe is there, the crossover is there.

i was there for that SUV set @ subswara , i thought it was def big things seeing a jungle dj at a genre blending party dropping a straight dnb tune and then literally slowing it down , and then mixing into dubstep . and then back to jungle..

also at Konkrete Jungle 2 weeks ago Marcus Visionary was killing it with some dirty ass jungle, and then he spins the Breakage version of 'Night' , and uses it as a transfer into a half hour set of dubstep . one of the sickest hour long sets ive seen in a long time . and everyone just kept dancing , the switch can be done , if ya got the skills

im all for it . break the boundaries . when it comes down to it arent we all just ravers anyway ?

Thanks for the feedback.
I know most of this stuff though, I go to Love for most of the events and I've known Cliff for ages - I dont want to do it in the respect that Dubwar and Subswara and T&B are doing this fusion (no disrespect I FULLY LOVE AND SUPPORT THESE PARTIES)... I'm just going for somethign different -trying to pry at something deeper and more CONNECTED.

It's rare that there is a party that is 50/50 jungle/dubstep. Yes, Konkrete definetely hits the dubstep tip for sure, but its still konkrete "JUNGLE" just as dubwar is called "DUB"war.

Let me refine my question... do you think it's possible to blur the divide by giving party goers more of a foundation for where these sounds originated ...? i dont know. ten tunes of jungle just aint enough for what i'm looking to do.

i want 50/50!

keep the suggestions coming, i truly appreciate the feedback!

sheeit i knew who dis be , you coming out tonight?

also i think a 50/50 party would be the shit .there's genre smashing going on all the time , people just usually dont even realize cuz the majority of the people in the dance arent trainspotters like me who have been "studying" electronic music since i started raving, and hence dont know the difference between the "genres" (which i think is awesome cuz theres no bias)

i think the focus should be about the deep connection between the "genres", and as long as you got an MC who can connect with the crowd and let everyone know whats going on then people will get the point real quick .

I would love to see Dubstep played with some of the older Jungle bits. I've never been a Junglist but, I have a friend that was and, when he takes out tunes from 95 - 98 I'm like "dude you should play those out" and, he's like "the kids won't get it".

Anyways, I would like to see a night with minimal/Dub Techno/Dubstep/UKG/2step/Funky/Bassline/Jungle

Or Funk/Skweee/Hip Hop/Dancehall/Grime/Dubstep/Jungle

Or Bluegrass/Bigband/Bigbeat/Chamber Music/Alt. Country/Dubstep/Jungle

I'm not sure the last one would go over well. At least people wouldn't show up until the end.

Yeah that's tough...I agree with Belly in the sense that she may not have heard dubstep without being at a jungle night, and that would've been bad. But I don't want a 50/50 Dub War or any other dubstep night. Dubstep crosses the lines of so many genres for me already. I think the crowd is different too btwn jungle and dubstep. What I would like to see is more tunes that are ragga/jungle influenced to bridge the gap between dub and jungle ala Rumble In The Jungle (Soul Jazz) comp, etc. To me that is a great intersection of both worlds. Dubstep (seems) to be moving away from reggae more and more...which is cool; I like how minimal techno is getting picked up the same way. But I'd be bummed with a 50/50 Dub War and to me dub is ultimately derived from reggae so the only jungle I'd be feeling is ragga/hardstep what-have-you. I'm more for the vertical meshing of style than the horizontal, you know?

I didn't get to the original Takeover night but I heard mixed reviews. Seems like that was the intent of those nights--sorta garden-variety, all things bass awareness etc. Does it ultimately get sound-clash-esque? There can be so many bad vibes with crews positing about what is what, purists v. futurists, beefs, whatever. I see lots of people at Dub War that are there for the music, know it, and truly react to bass in the same way mainstream music lovers react to songs and lyrics. I also see more and more people that are at just another rave/dance (maybe their first and totally fucked up), and maybe don't know what is going on at all. I'm sure all nights have their share of this lay-person trend. It's a tough point. The potential of dubstep is tip of the iceberg for me, already a fusion. It draws a lot of different people on its own.

We got the Junglists sitting next to the Dubsteppers. We got the Bassliners right next to the Twosteppers! It's all our turf! Can you dig it!?

on the very day this thread was posted no less . that night was heavy as fuck. and it wasnt specifically a dubstep or jungle party . respect to the tomb crew

the potential is there. people are ready .

well then you need to go to more jungle nights my friend. the types of people you see are exactly the same. some of the people are even the same. also no one said anything about a 50-50 dubwar. they have their thing going already, and its good . this is a new idea
