Serious deck related question

I'm a cheap bastard. My mom and dad just spent a shitload getting me a wacom tablet, quad core mac pro, and graphics programs.

I need to convince them I could get some use out of decks. I'll probably need some CD decks or something like that, as I've got no vinyl and serato's a bit expensive (as far as I know.) Any suggestions on something I could get/save money for?

I'm deffo looking for cheap shitty decks, but not instantly disintegrating stuff. Price range is probably under 300 US dollars. Any suggestions?

TBH, not much you can do for that price and still get something worth getting... look into the Stanton STR-80 or higher or look for a used pair of Techs. You might end up paying a little more than $300, but worth it. In fact, thats the argument I would use with my parents... tell them either they spend a few hundy right now and get you some cheaper ones that will eventually need to be replaced, or they get you some Technics that you will have for 5+ years as long as you take care of them.

The other option is a software/controller based system, like this

Torq and that would be a pretty decent starter setup, for right around the $300 you're talkin about. If you have a Guitar Center near you, go in and talk them down for a deal.

NO! Ill save you the trouble... dont get that. When I worked at Guitar Center those always came back broken. We had one for like three years that we couldnt even get rid of at a blowout clearance price.

you could always just save a bit more money and actually get a good setup.

instant gratification isn't always worth it. save up some more cash, get a used pair of techs and serato/tractor/whatever off of craigslist or ebay for maybe $800-$1000.

Serato's not that expensive. If your folks have just spend near £2000 on a mac and tablet then another £350 on Serato isn't that expensive. Tis the don in mixing technology.

urgh! dont get any of the 1's u wer looking at. Decent, affordable numarks are the axis series. had mine for 1 and a half years (axis 4's) with absolutely no problem(although axis 9's are worth buying but mite b out of the price range). and they look better than those DJ motherboards you've been thinking of getting.

if your parents are willing to spring for some decks, let them know that technics maintain their value, so if for any reason you end up not playing or whatever (thinking like a parent here), they will get still get a damn good resale price.

i had to save for a good couple of years until I was able to get my turntables (technics- my first, and hopefully last

). Seems like you got a few other toys to be playing with in the meantime?

I can vouch for Torq being pretty damn good.

Works with both vinyl and cd. U can use the onboard mixer and plug ur headfones in the usb audio box (cant remember what to call it) to monitor, so no decks needed.

This is sounding highly sexy atm. So, if I got no decks or anything, can I run it all from within the software?
Also, this thing comes with free Torq for a hundred and thirty bucks, I believe.

get a job, save up for equipment worth buying... in the meantime get a "copy" of ableton and teach yourself other aspects of making good mixes... you might even end up deciding you like working that way...

Sounds cool, I've played with ableton and it's fun as hell. Best ting is, I can run it with that MIDI controller up top.
