Got a higher freq bass line not sure were to put it coz I need room for my kick. Am I right in cutting out ALL frequences around my instruments desired frequency space or should I just make two sharp cuts either side?
You shouldn't need to totally remove frequencies, just roll them back until it sounds ok.

Less is more my friend. If you can't find space for stuff then maybe you don't need anything more.
If all else fails, try turning everything down a bit to create more headroom.

Just create a little notch in the sub for the kick, and then possibly do some sidechaining.
If you're really having trouble with a mix, try turning EVERYTHING down to zero and then bring stuff back in - but keep all the volumes pretty low. Only give
just as much as you need of each sound to achieve the desired effect. This will save you loads of headroom - you can always get the loudness back later with some limiting.
Hope some of this helps.
