makin it sit right?

yeah just mixin a tune and tryin to create space for all my instruments. Need some help on this ive got my sum from 40htz to 85htz and cut everythin out from around it. Got a higher freq bass line not sure were to put it coz I need room for my kick. Am I right in cutting out ALL frequences around my instruments desired frequency space or should I just make two sharp cuts either side?
Findin it hard to make it sound good as I am alwayz runnin out of room to place shit in while still maintainin the sounds I liked in the first place.
Just to rant on a bit more; After my sub I put my kick at 86htz then doe I cut all the frequencies off above were my higher bass comes in? cos it just makes my kick sound like a bag of steamin hot shite.
pleez help to make my life easier!!!

Ermmm. Try making a small notch in your sub for the kick to sit nicely or sidechain it.

You shouldn't need to totally remove frequencies, just roll them back until it sounds ok.

Less is more my friend. If you can't find space for stuff then maybe you don't need anything more.

If all else fails, try turning everything down a bit to create more headroom.

Just create a little notch in the sub for the kick, and then possibly do some sidechaining.

If you're really having trouble with a mix, try turning EVERYTHING down to zero and then bring stuff back in - but keep all the volumes pretty low. Only give just as much as you need of each sound to achieve the desired effect. This will save you loads of headroom - you can always get the loudness back later with some limiting.
