hello all. I have recently dropped out of university to further my passion for the wonderful world of music, dancing, djing and spreading of vibrations. So anyway, this is my first proper attempt at a dubstep tune. Nothing hugely original here yet but I hope with further digging (it's quite unbelievable how deep you can go with music) I can develop my sound to become a little more innovative and basically less shit with my production.

So if you fancy listening and giving me some pointers, praise or criticism I'd be very happy to hear. Here is the song:

Listening....

Liking the intro...proper word art vibe and i like the plinky percussion. Beat comes in nicely altho you could layer the snare with something a bit more punchy to give it more hit. Nice vocal and good pitch change with that throbbing bass.

Goods sounds but the piece doesn't go anywhere...doesn't really feel like it drops....Think in terms of sections make sure you have an intro, main body, breakdown and outro in some kind of order...not to be forumliac but all music has this in some form (even steve reich!). The beat does build up but it is too gradual to give an impact to the elements....the background pads and godspeed you black emperor violins work well.

This does build up nicely and definatly has the feeling of 'post rock' crossing dubstep....has a nice chilled vibe but lacks power and definition without emphasised structure.

The violin is very good....Lokking forward to hearing more.

Liking the feel of this. Builds up nicely but could do with that bit of extra structure to help bring it out and add to the effect. Excellent beats and atmosphere, especially the violins!

Heh, is the post rock influence that obvious? I went through all sorts of aliases before I settled on the slow riot thing, my internet handle as a misguided internet trawling youth. But for the most part I want to move away from that stuff and onto the dancefloor.

Thanks for the advice, you're totally right. I guess I spent so much time surrounding myself with these bleeping noises and loops which started out as being kind of fun and dancy, and then hours and hours later trying and look at it from the point of view of someone listening to it for the first time... which elements to bring in subtly, and which parts where obvious stuff drops. and then again, and then again. Until at the end of it all I had left is some self absorbed piece that has forgotten what an actual song is and just dragged is sorry arse around without actually going anywhere. oh well, all part of the learning curve I guess.

Quite amusingly the parts of this song that you liked best are the ones that took the least time. The violin and pads is infact just a quick one-take of some harmonica with a few effects.

I think you've summed it up well here. It's a very nice piece of music I think, but lacks the structure and punch (for want of a better word) of a dubstep tune.

p.s. i'm seeing steve reich and musicians play music for 18 musicians in barbican in october, looking forward to this a lot...
