I'm broke too, but thats because I spent all my $ on all new vinyl. Now, I have a load of fuggin WIKKED MUSIC I COULD MAKE PEOPLES HEADZ EXPLODE>.. excuse me.. i got excited about my new records. *cough* So yah, get a job. buy new records.

i can only speak for myself, but even in the last couple years, with a full time job, in this economy AND in this particular state in the US, buying records became a no-go a few years ago.

the prices of records went up (especially imports), our local record store closed shop, gigs stopped paying for shit, the price of transportation, food and utilities rose, and it was a no-go for me, after years of obsessive record buying. i bought a few must-haves here and there, but other than that, if i wanted tunes it had to be digital. a few bucks here and there was infinitely more affordable than having to order online and make big orders of expensive records plus shipping.

now that my full time job decided to eliminate my position, after 6 months of no work and now only a part time job...records are an impossibility.

what sucks about this is that i know it is affecting record shops and distributors as well. i know some think that those of us buying predominantly digital don't care about that, but i, for one, do care. that said, at least as far as the US goes, i don't see it getting any better in the near future.

Unfortunately vinyl does not fit into my budget either. Even this year I tried to keep up a little bit. Buying only the hottest of the hot. I can't do it anymore at all. I sure am glad digital is available. Be it tunes from friends, my own or buying online. I get by on less than 50 bucks a month usually. It makes for more interesting selections too IMO. Not really bothered I can't buy new records.

I still buy vinyl, but the threshold for me has been raised quite a bit on which tunes I'll buy on vinyl, which one's I'll buy digital, and which ones I'll pass altogether.

But to be honest, there's nothing wrong w/ being a discerning consumer...I think it actually makes you appreciate what you have that much more.

Me too tbh but I could go without certain necessities when I was single. Now I have kids, wife, mortgage etc.

Food for the kids mouth > vinyl.

Pretty simple.

i love vinyl too much, whenever i buy digital i still feel like i got screwed, i just love records, if i cant buy it on vinyl i just wont buy digital either :/

so to actually ANSWER your question.... it hasnt effected me cause im a loser and havnt had a job for 2 years and buy records with money made from doing random jobs for friends and family.

For me i tend to buy in wave's depending on my financial situation. Last year I broke the taboo of picking up Digital stuff as it was in keeping wiht my budget and allowed me to get new music. This year I have bought more physical records than in the last 2. But again when i have the fund's my habit returns and i get back into spending.

i just CAN'T buy digital though, i'd rather buy a single 12" than spend the same money on 3 or so releases digitally...

it doesn't help when you get people sending you tunes (oh poor me) cos that satisfys your craving for new music to play, and then months later you realise u missed some important vinyl releases and the collection suffers

I feel very confident playing vinyl records while the mp3s go by the wayside. I am not confident playing a compressed file. The quality of the mp3 product just cannot compare to the quality of the vinyl record. I am referring specifically to playing these tunes @ a l o u d volume @ gigs and events for people. I have to have a quality and consistent product when performing. Locally, vinyl Djs get booked more for this very reason. you just can't tell what going to happen with the many variables that come with the Mp3. With a record, its simple. Record to the deck, needle to the record and its time to party. Anything else requires you to jump through too many more hoops & I'm not the hoop jumping type. IMO

Plus, you can't make a bowl or cool ashtray from an mp3.

i havent bought any new tunes for 3 months as im completely skint. playing the same 150 dubstep 12"s over and over again gets pretty fucking boring, no matter how much i like the tunes, so ive been going back to my hip hop and trying to get my scratching and juggling back on track. i expect to start buying again pretty soon, but its not really feasable atm.

also a lot of tunes that i want to play don't ever see vinyl so it makes that decision easier

Totally feel your pain. I went for months just buying mp3s but still find myself picking them up on wax a few months later sometimes.

Tbh I'm buying more vinyl than ever at the moment but all sorts of genres across the board and a lot of 2nd hand stuff.
