Lagged MIDI recording

Post by grix » Wed Aug 27, 2008 1:17 pm

Easy,
I have just installed all of my software onto my new pc and for the most part everything is running smoothly. The only problem im having is with my MIDI keyboard. Well its propably not the keyboard itself but how my computer is taking in it's information or something.

When i record some MIDI e.g. a bassline or a drum beat all the notes that i press appear about 1/4 beat before i actually played them. So if i create a 4 bar bassline the whole thing will be shifted about 1/4 beat early when i play it back.

Im running Cubase sx3 and my latency seems to be ok, under 10 i think. Theres no lag when i play a note, this pre-lag only seems to happen when i record.

Any help would be great.
Peace.

PS
Im using a soundblaster X-Fi soundcard, dunno if that helps.

Any help on this one people?

I just tried making some automated basslines with my modulation wheel and the automation has this strange pre-lag on it too!!

It seems as if Cubase is anticipating some kind of lag and placing all the information early.

Please help!

first of all buy a proper soundcard if you can't afford one google ASIO4ALL , install it and select it as your soundcard in cubase and it should get rid of your problems

but make sure you replace your pile of crap soundcard asap

Isnt a soundblaster decent? Ive heard its good for production.

The wierd thing is that i had the exact same soundcard and software on my previouse pc and it worked fine. Now i have bought a beast: quad core, 4gig ram etc, but i am having this problem.

When you say lower your buffers is that the same as latency? Because this isnt your standard lag lol. It keeps placing my notes earlier then when i played them, not late!

Your computer is so fast it reads your brain? Hehe...

Maybe you should lower your latency as low as possible until you get crackles/artifacts, odd though :?

lol, it would seem that way.

But seriously, its not predicting the notes i play, it just places them too early in the tune after i play them in. So if i just play along to the click and record that, when i listen to it the notes will all be slightly early. Its fucking wierd!

Had the same card and software on my previous pc and this never happened.

And my latency is about 9. I get no lag when playing a note, just this wierd shit. Its like cubase is anticipating some lag and trying to compensate; but there is no lag!

Well if you upgraded your PC and kept the same soundcard you might need to get third party drivers / new drivers since the X-FI is getting on a bit now. and its processing it wrong and its not syncing proper. But it is a odd issue have you tried another host? Maybe try Reaper, its free!
