I like J-Tek, a good tribute to the Breakbeat Rave sound of yore. Perhaps more of an acquired taste than Dubstep though, unless you survived the early nineties

I think j-tek is Jungle Techno. That period just before drum and bass came about and jungle was getting darker and darker. I'm crap with dates but I guess that's about 96? I have a few compilations on cd of around that time. Good stuff, if it is what I think it is. Haven't heard this revival stuff though.

I dont have a clue if this is right, I think there's more of a jtek presence on DOA more and more...

ye i think that is right, digital, randall, outrage and others started up j-tek records as a way of "bringing it back to go forward". first release was a couple numbers from modular and outrage, with fine day rmx on 002 which has recently come out i think. interesting to see where it goes. find the whole sounds vibrancy lovely to build a set with.
not sure whether it's just this label the original post is referring to or the general sound with j-tek. was j-tek ever used as a term for a sound/genre before this?

Basically the early stuff on Basement Records and a couple of other labels. 4x4 kick drum with jungle/hardcore sonics.

ah seen, doesn't that put it in before the kinda jungle peak of 92/93? I always thought jtek came after that... It's all abit before my time, I don't think even knew about dance music back then. I had to go to secondary school in 94 before I found out about it all.

j tek is a term for japanese techno as well. Before the jungle tekno thing tht is going on now if you wanna get pciky

Big up the J-Tek lot. The push to make drum and bass at a slower tempo is an excellent idea. The grooves can feel different with breakbeats at a lower tempo.

I went to one of their nights and there were a lot of people enjoying it, old (probably many of whom were into jungle in its early days) and young (and there's a lot of them who've never heard what drum and bass can be like at lower tempos).

I like the Kirsty Hawkshaw tune. That one sounds straight out of about 1992. But the point is, these tunes don't have to sound old. It's not about just re-hashing old ideas. It's about realising the potential of a slower tempo in D&B, and making stuff that sounds old and new within that.

If it inspires more and more people to make d&b at this tempo (I know there's a few who were already doing this) and puts it in the limelight, then that's promising for the future.

This first took place under the guise of hardcore breaks and was more about re-introducing the 92 hardcore vibe back into modern music. J Tek is a follow on from this ethos but is more about the jungle vibes. Nu Basement was putting out the jungle techno style before though. Okay after having listened to a few myspaces and ting, I see what my mistake was. I'm thinking of stuff like dread jungle techno by ray kieth. When I listen to this j-tek stuff, I hear 92/93 hardcore rather than the jungle/dnb/techno/dark sounds of 95/96. Can't say I heard something that's grabbed me yet out of the j-tek stuff (although, isn't it (dark) hardcore breaks already?).

Easy Pete. Yeah basically is hardcore breaks, just the guys making it didn't know about hardcore breaks or wanted to start their own genre or summing like that and so it was. I quite often play Living in a Basement in dubstep sets. We had them down to the last Rusty Needle at Blue Mountain.

Personally I can't really see it "blowing dustep out of the water" but nice to have it there.

I don't think it's about starting their own genre. J-Tek is a label and the name of their nights. It's good promotion to have a recognisable name. Nothing wrong with a bit of business sense, but people freak out when you use the word business when talking music (which is stupid as if your music 'business' does well and you release good music, then said good music gets into the ears and hands of more people).

Went off on a bit of a tangent there, but anyway the obsession with genres and sub-genres is getting annoying.
