[NYC] - Flying Lotus & Daedelus 9/7/08 @ LPR

Post by abstractsound » Mon Sep 08, 2008 5:35 pm

largin up any and all who came out for the madness. place was packed at peak hour, and the club's owners recognized the need for events like this in NYC. score one for the home team.

daedelus tore up his opening slot (sorry to all for the confusion, as i totally expected him to go on second). the bass got so heavy at one point FlyLo had to come to the stage and hold his laptop down because the subwoofers were making it run off his table. the bass even crashed his laptop at one point, thankfully not during his set.

so percussion gave everyones ears a much needed decibel break. they performed their "music for trains" and although they were sometimes quieter than the crowd, it was quality business. highlight for me was the performance on the bike wheel that was totally synced up to the projections of train wheels spinning.

then the man of the evening, FlyLo himself came to the stage and absolutely killed it. tapping some energy from his family bloodline (FlyLo mentioned how his great uncle John Coltrane had played the room before when it was the Village Gate, and how much it meant to him to be throwing it down it the same room.) FlyLo's definitely got the jazz

guest appearance from John Robinson, aka Lil' Sci of Scienz of Life, who spit a couple verses during the middle of the set. (and for any fans, his long awaited John Robinson Project will be dropping in November, with production from Daedelus, FlyLo, MF Doom and more including the stunner "Black Gold")

about halfway though the 90 minute set, Lotus transitioned into about 20 minutes of solid dubstep with Rustie's remix of Zomby's "Spliff Dub" , the soundsystem supplied more than enough bassweight to meditate. I believe this is when he also dropped "Robo Tussin," his bootleg remix of Lil' Wayne's "A Milli"

after about an hour and twenty minutes, with everyones ear's a ringing and faces melted, FlyLo caught his breath and addressed the crowd. he was shocked in awe and respect that so many people came out to this show. as a thank you to those who hung around til the end, he dropped an out of hand new remix who's release details are unsure. the remix was for FlyLo's favorite band, and was commisioned just days agos by the group. if you were there, you know what it is, and if not, well harass your friends to tell you

sentiment of the night from the man himself; "Your dreams can come true"

and if you go see another Flying Lotus show on this run, be sure to stop by the merch table. brother is giving away some killer packs of rolling papers courtesy of warp records. cardboard case folds out into the Los Angeles album artwork, which is actually cardboard for filters. rolled an excellent spliff for the after hours come down

keep your ears and eyes open for future events @ (le) poisson rouge. one of our owners was so impressed with the show last night that the club is trying to confirm FlyLo for another set Tuesday night at the Deerhunter show. I'll post details in the events forum if anything forumlates

venue is def nice... happy they see the potential for the style...

daedelus i thought played a fresh set, especially towards the end, was kinda sad when he finished...

so percussion are a bit too cerebral for me... maybe in a different setting.. but last night i def was thinking, these guys are either on some next level shit, or just kinda suck... im thinkin prolly next level, but not my cup of tea...

flying lotus def killed it... always great to see lil sci too... hes def one of the best most slept on...

my one main problem was the overall flow of the show... i guess it was treated more like bands than dance music.. but the whole house lights & music in between acts was imho a huge buzzkill... i think maybe next time if yall could have a MC/Host to let people knows whats going on in between, and maybe a DJ on stage for interludes, and please please no house lights!! lol..

but word, def some good music and a nice venue that i would love to go back to...

i hear you on those elements of the show. some things our technical staff also weren't pleased on. but this came down to the booking. this show is part of the wordless music series.. and the whole point of that series is to juxtapose classical and charted music against more electronic acts to cross scenes and expand general music appreciation. the original intent was to have daedelus and so percussion blend sets, but the nature of their material was so different that it was called off last minute.

if you notice there are no similar bookings in the wordless music series. that is few other shows has artists that are typically in the DJ party scene, where artists sets go b2b and the nights dont come up til its time to go home

also apologize for the delay before flylo's set, as i was the fool running around trying to get his audio feed to send a clean signal so we could push it as hard as possible from FOH

thanks for the review, if this hadn't been on a sunday i definitely would have made the trip. i saw daedelus in baltimore on monday and spoke with him a little about the show. he said flylo killed it and there were great vibes all around. the flylo/daedelus co-bill is like a dream come true for me, daedelus straight killed it in bmore.
