Bestival 2008
oh my fucking god this was good!!! the mud/rain was savage but the way i see it, aslong as you have a dry tent to go back to then its all good! the 4 or 5 hours of dubstep on sunday were incredible, oneman played a decent set of classics in the vice tent too. was good to see some familiar faces lurking about
bigup corpsey, notts/futureproof crew, nectar selecta, ben ufo, lord greena and any others i missed out - you all know the score. what a weekend...
it was pretty grim at times but sunday made up for everything, by far the best day
Appleblim & Kode9 smashed it but Mala & Loefah were the highlight for me, perfect vibes in there (except that one twat going round jabbing people in the face, he got dealt with properly by security)
good to meet you btw corpsey

killer festival, and to fuck with the bad weather. mud is good imo. sorts out the men from the boys ;-) but it was nice that a load of people buggered off by sunday as some of the tents were stupidly busy fri/sat (nearly got pulped trying to get inside for roots manuva). agreed that sun was the best day. blim played exactly the kind of set i'd been baying to hear: deep, dark and techy. perfect for the hazy sunday afternoon crew. kode9 and spaceape pushed things into typically fucked up territory, building to a slamming poison dart finale. yes please. and as for loefah/mala, what to say. top drawer shit. i didn't think that things could get any better, but being the techno-head that i am i wandered over to see mr. original-detroit-cum-nuschool-berlin, carl craig. what followed was something very special, but i'll save the hyperboles for another forum. a great day indeed. sat wasn't too bad either. gary numan, red snapper, roots manuva, aphex twin and jamie jones all did their thing(s), and it sounded good (if a little quiet at times). as far as friday goes, i was in a rotter of a mood all day owing to the general wetness/overcrowdedness, but i'm happy to report that magnetic man were half decent, and m.a. hobbes very decent.
music aside, what made this event so good was the total, unadalterated silliness of it all. i can't remember ever lauging so much at a festival. thousands of fully grown adults wandering around in 'sea freak' costumes, fucked off their faces and caked in mud, makes for lots of laughter. and everyone i met was totally sound. respect to all. we're gonna die of typhoid, but who gives a shit. it was well worth it ;-)

Such a sick weekend, second time i've been to Bestival and enjoyed it even more. The vibes were amazing, everyone was loveing it, despite the mud, although i hear alot of people left early.
Caught Magnetic Man on Friday, first time i've seen that... pretty impressed. Then stayed for MAH, but was a bit messy by then. Just managed to catch a bit of Oneman in Vice, sounding nice.
Sunday night was absolutely sick, it cured my scatty sunday feeling, gutted i missed Appleblim, arrived just at the start of Kode9 and managed to find my mates finally. It was all about Mala and Loefahs set though, everyone in that tent was loving it, a lot of energy in there for the last night of a 4 day mash up!
Will be in attendance again next year!

What everyone else has said really. Such a good weekend despite the horrendous rain, didn't want it to end!
Sunday night was definately the highlight, appleblim/kode 9/loefah/mala - absolutely killed it. Great vibes in that tent, absolute madness where I was next to the speakers.
Can anyone clarify what the running order was? I clocked appleblim then kode 9 & space ape, then was it loefah on his own or with mala or one after the other or what? I was pretty wrecked by that point, and only remember how sick the tunes were and what a good time I was having! Poison dart and anti-war dub especially, so happy. Remember skanking out like a madman to spongebob as well, doesn't matter how many times I hear that tune!
Also respect to bestival for putting on a festival with such good sound compared to the others I've been too, systems in the tents were mostly spot on I thought. Acts going on till 3 or 5am was also excellent.
Only negative was the ten minutes in which I lost my jacket, fell over on my face in that swamp of a floor (without jacket), and then got up and accidentilly lobbed my phone in the mud and killed it.
Apart from that though, loved it! Back next year for sure.

I would have to say that the sound systems were, yet again, a big festival dissapointment.boyd wrote: Also respect to bestival for putting on a festival with such good sound compared to the others I've been too, systems in the tents were mostly spot on I thought.
I was so hyped for Aphex Twin in the big top but it was so quiet - yet the in the same tent the previous night the system was much louder for Slam
..just seemed so inconsistent
Sunday was clearly the one
Kode 9 set was spiritual
and I was in such a special place for the start of set Loefah and Mala which was soo deep
Gutted about Laurent Garnier not turning up
Other highlights for me were Slam, Santagold, Underworld and Chromeo
Agreed, the dirtier Aphex's set got, the quieter it also got. Although a ket induced rave up on the front railing did seem to float my boat at the time, I was screwing after it finished, especially in such an anti-climatic fashion (walked off the stage midway thru his last track...come on). Think the sound might have had something to do with 808 state coming on but even so no excuse, and as a result no one was dancing, like a tent full of lobotomy patients (which i was no doubt one of)...Whineo wrote:I would have to say that the sound systems were, yet again, a big festival dissapointment.boyd wrote: Also respect to bestival for putting on a festival with such good sound compared to the others I've been too, systems in the tents were mostly spot on I thought.

Urgh I hate reality.
Was great, wish I could do it again next weekend really... The mud was shit but not THAT shit - I didn't fall over once, it was just long not being able to sit down outside tents etc. The atmosphere was still great though, on balance Bestival probably has the best atmosphere of any festival I've gone to.
Musically I have to say I was a bit disappointed. Friday didn't know what was going on because of the 6 quid programs (what the fuck was that about Rob Da Human Bank Vault?) so managed to stumble across a few things but didn't see anything particularly great... The only thing I DID know about was Oneman at the Vice tent, which was sick despite the rubbish sound system in there. Big up Robin DC for screaming footsie lyrics in my face and berating me constantly for being into dubstep lol... Big up rhys also, was surreal/good to meet you... and Olly, necta, messer etc... Big up Oney too obviously, would be interested to know if you stuck around at all cos I heard your tent was flooded...
Saw Tayo on Saturday while completely mashed on a cocktail of stuff, seem to remember it was all pretty great apart from the dubstep bit which was just shite wobbler after shite wobbler. Can't really remember what else I saw that day apart from Sinden in the Bollywood bar. I love that tent, Sinden was quite good, I was too hungry. Saw about twenty minutes of Aphex but it was so rammed in there just thought fuck it in the end and left - he wasn't doing anything particularly amazing up there and I heard he got paid 40 grand... In fact, it would have been a good set to watch if it hadn't been Aphex and therefore absolutely rammo.
Loads of DJs I saw were playing this style of house which sounds pretty much like bassline/dubstep - that wampwamp sort of bass-sound is everywhere at the moment.
Sunday was definitely the best day, both in terms of me managing not to get too twatted on ketamine before lunchtime and in musical terms. I was a bit disappointed that the music I enjoyed the most by FAR was the stuff I already knew I would enjoy lol... Still. Appleblim was superb as per usual, the system was booming for his set - that Breakage RMX, RSD - Over It, Brackles - Glazed/Get A Job etc etc. This style of dubstep has a lot going for it at once - depth, weight, rhythmic propulsion, emotion etc.
Kode was sick too but the system was WAYYYY too quiet at that point so it felt curiously flat, as if Kode was just a warm up DJ in between acts. This was a massive shame as he was playing some great funky/rustie etc. and the crowd had really thinned out (this might have also been because he was on an hour early).
Festival highlight was definitely Mala/Loefah though - that was the best Mystikz set involving Loefah I've seen in aaaages. Really built it up over the two hours with some deep meditative stuff interspersed with bangers, only really got bored of it right towards the end when it all went militantly wobblish. Anti War Dub, Livin Different, some insane Rustie tune that Loe played, Lean FWD (Everytime!)... and Loe played some tune with breakbeats in it that I really hope is a new one of his, and even if it wasn't it was heavyweight. Such a big vibe for their set too, was uplifting.
After that saw Carl Craig for about half an hour being pretty boring, then Buraka Som Sistema who were sick but I was too tired to bother getting into it...
Anyway, despite the music not really blowing my mind and the mud, I still inexplicably really really wish I could do it again lol... Next year I hope it's sunny and dry.
