is it time to move on?
ok i use reason 4 to make songs and if i want to do n e think amazing with audio i use cubase sx3. i starting to get sick of the sound i get. is it time to move on? will i get a better sound just useing cubase? or sould i move to diffrent software? i know that its 100 small tweaks to get a slighty better sound whatever software i use but i feel that i have got past what Rason can do for me. i was thinking of genertating waves in Audacity and then bringing them into cubase, would this work?

im using reason 4 aswell, and you can get seriously good results using just reason. check the first tune in my virb, thats all made with just reason, the dark reese bass was one thor and a scream distortion unit

i think its better to learn 1 program as best you can rather than to keep changing.
as dm said you can get excellent results with reason, a lot of big people use it so its upto you whether you persevere with it to get the best out of it.
no sequencer is right for everyone so if you feel more comfortable with cubase then use that. as long as the end result is what you want then it doesn't matter what you use.
i struggle a bit with reason once there are a million things in the rack and you're adding eqs or something, i find logic better for me generally but loads of people use reason.
to end...if you like cubase just use that.

i might take some flak for this, but imo.. reason is shit. as a sampler it's fine.. that's what a sampler is supposed to do, play samples. but i feel like it has such a canned sound. like subtractor just sounds awful and since i figured out how to make basses with it, every time i hear the number 8 wave in a track i want to fucking kill myself.
do yourself a favor, get into cubase.. use reason still for drums and whatever, but start playing with some different synths for the bass. even check out some sampled basses.. you can do some pretty interesting things via sampling. it's a different method of control.
experiment. that's what learning music is all about.

i actually laughed out loud at thatblack lotus wrote:every time i hear the number 8 wave in a track i want to fucking kill myself.

i know what you mean about the canned sound, ive been into production for about 2 years now, i tinkered about on reason 3 for a year, learned a few tricks and for the last year have been seriously stuck into pretty much learning reason. im using 4 now and im just starting to achieve a much crisper, stronger coherent sound.
just look at the widdlers work, ive seen him say on here he is using reason alone

oh i'm not saying it's impossible at all. i think press uses reason and he makes bangin tunes. ultrablack as well are reason heads. all i'm saying is that it takes more effort. imo, i just feel like it's more useful rewired into a host like ableton.. you know, send the drums into some light eq and compression to clean and fatten them up, and layer the shit out of some bass to make it modulate and pulse the fuck out.darkmatterUK wrote: i know what you mean about the canned sound, ive been into production for about 2 years now, i tinkered about on reason 3 for a year, learned a few tricks and for the last year have been seriously stuck into pretty much learning reason. im using 4 now and im just starting to achieve a much crisper, stronger coherent sound.
part of it, too, is finding a good frame of reference. listening closely to a track you're into and really trying to hear what makes some of the bass so awesome. at the beginning of excision's shambhala mix, he does that fucking awesome sound test. when the bass is correct, it has a really incredible modulating feel to it.

yea agreed, i got ableton about 3 months ago, and my pc doesnt quite allow me to build the sort of tracks im making at the mo in rewire. so im building the whole tune in reason, doing as much as i can in there, then rewire in record one channel at a time, shutdown reason then work on it from there, til i upgrade my system that isblack lotus wrote:i just feel like it's more useful rewired into a host like ableton.. you know, send the drums into some light eq and compression to clean and fatten them up

ProTools is a very stable platform for multi-tracking ALOT of audio
however, it cannot touch Logic, Cubase, or Nuendo when it comes to processing midi, and virtual instruments
but if you choose to pursue recording as a career, you will need know Protools because most professional studios around the worls use the HD systems
mbox and 008 are a joke IMHO

i think theres plenty of ways you can liven your sounds up in reason so they dont sound dead, or "reason like". practice practice practice. i too thought for a while reason was totally shite until i found out which big names use it, then i became determined to make the most of it, and with some of the techniques ive learned lately im falling in love withe reason and production all over again.

i'm a reaktor head, with FLS as a sequencer and audition for multi-track. depends what kind of music i am making, but that's the current core of my system. a handful of VSTs.. i really like predator and albino. i have a novation k-station hardware synth that i adore, and also use a sony hi-MD recorder for field recording and sampling.
ultimately, everyone will have different setups. i do recommend midi controllers because having something in your hands makes for a different feel. it's also really fun to knock out your beats on a keyboard.
do whatever it is you do and do it good.

See what works for you workflow-wise and whether you're particularly enamoured of any particular set of built in plugins. Then go with it.
Would recommend Reaper as worth looking at - very cheap, unlimited demo, lots of people seem to be getting into it...

also dont let frustration get the better of you, research exactly what it is your having problems with in reason and find out how to combat these problems

reason is more than capable of great sounding tunes, just requires more elbow grease than other production software to achieve t
