BIOGRAPHY
The Third Man is a music producer from london, into a broad range of music with a range of influences from Techno and Electro to downbeat electronica, funk, soul and more. I produce in a home studio using Ableton Live, a Korg Electribe MX-1and various Vsts as well as a home made midi-controller built using the Midibox protocol. My first release is out on vinyl this March and I have a slew of tracks that I am hoping to get out there one way or another.
Ai Press Release:
“Although The Third Man (Toby Leeming, 26) is a born and bred Londoner, his musical roots lie in Scotland where he lived for 4 years whilst studying at University. During this time he met dj’s, producers and promoters and not happy just watching others ply their trade he started to teach himself how to dj. On borrowing a friends laptop with a copy of Reason on he began to explore the capabilities of music programming and digital sounds.
Surrounded by regular techno nights featuring the likes of Stephen Brown, Neil Landstrumm, DJ Rolando and many more his taste was very much slanted towards all things techno and particularly the classic Detroit sounds. However after many all night trips to the Arches, it became apparent that north of the border people liked their music that little bit harder and this was something toby couldn’t resist embracing taking to the more industrial sounds of Surgeon, Monolake and minimalist legends such as Robert Hood and Jeff Mills.
The Third Man has a live performance using Ableton, a Korg EMX-1, a home made midi controller mixing desk and live keys – for bookings contact bookings@thethirdmanmusic.co.uk.”

The first thing likely to hit you with The Third Man’s debut LP, ‘Clarion Call’ is the striking cover art. The image is one of a series of anatomical drawings that German artist Karl Wesker devoted 8 years of his life producing for the Thieme Atlas of Anatomy. The mini-album, a selection of cuts for the dj, delivers 8 tracks of pristine techno and electro and had The Third Man been the subject used for Karl’s graphic illustration, the artist would surely have depicted the deeply electronic blood running through his veins.
Album opener, ‘Hemsby Acid’ kicks off with sparse percussion and lazy synth sweeps, slowly adding layers, breaking out into a growling bassline before developing into a full-on 303 flavoured workout, written on a Bloc weekend comedown, and named accordingly, this is guaranteed to set the dance floors a light. ‘Synchronise’ follows and is another tough jacker but this time of the electro variety. The track mixes a classic percussive palette with an abrasive bassline, some lighter melodies and occasional hoover tones while the robot frontman delivers his sinister vocodered message.
The Third Man’s love of Detroit techno has been exhibited in some of his earlier work and this can again be heard on the album’s title track; a mellow atmospheric number with a deep pulse bassline and swirling pianos, definitely a track for the ‘morning after’. The mellow vibe remains on the next track, ‘East Anglian Blues’, this time in a more sinister dubby vein but again with a bubbling undercurrent of electronic blips, graceful synths and understated hits.
Never wanting to take his eye off the floor for too long, the tempo is upped a notch on ‘Hex’; a track that is equal parts floaty bliss and minimal jacker and one that’s likely to work so well in a variety of environments.
Whether The Third Man can claim ‘Attacks’ as being entirely his own work is surely open to debate as the distorted rhythmical mechanics emanating from the speakers sound as if his machines are revolting against him although his trademark synths are once again present and provide the perfect counterbalance resulting once again in a track with one eye on the past and one setting a course firmly on the future.
‘Flaccid House’ says it all in the title really, lazy old school acid lines combine with a crushing, warped electro kick and a bastardised 808 to produce a dancefloor bomb for that time of night when things are bordering on the deranged – this is electro that’ll make you change shape!
Electro is once again the underlying theme on ‘Marianus’ although as ever with the Third Man’s productions he’s not content to stay within the typical confines of any given genre, this time throwing playful melodies and yet another dose of his seemingly endless deep bass medicine into the cauldron for the album’s closing track.
