GRAZ - 05-09 NOV-08 - ELEVATE FESTIVAL

Post by elevate » Wed Oct 08, 2008 6:07 pm

Image
Festival for contemporary music, art and political discourse
Nov 5 - 9 2008, Graz

Four nights packed with concerts, live acts, and DJs from all over the world. Four days of lectures, discussions, workshops, installations and performances from (independent) organizations, critical thinkers, activists and artists. Most events take place in venues carved inside the historic Schlossberg – the hill in the center of Graz.

The aim of Elevate 2008 is, together with scientists and activists, to raise awareness of the importance of the commons and to shed light on the social and cultural conflicts in the usage of these goods. This will be the framework for discussions, workshops, films and lectures as well as for the presentation of innovative projects.

Numerous workshops within the framework of the Elevate Lab in Forum Stadtpark offer local artists the chance to get to know the international festival guests. An Audio/Visual performance (DJ Spooky), interventions in public space and light experiments (in cooperation with TU Graz) guarantee a new atmosphere in and around the Schlossberg Graz. Guest curators like DJ Scotch Egg from Japan provide for unforgettable experiences during the nightly music programme.

What do the privatization of water, the flourishing remix culture, the genetic information of a tropical plant, and open source software development all have in common?

They are all part of the fiercely contested commons; natural, cultural and social resources which we have inherited from the natural world or which have been developed through collective processes. In essence, they form the foundation of our lives.

Commons are the basis for the production of food and pharmaceuticals. They are as important for breathing as they are for social networks. We need them to interact, produce and deliver knowledge, art and culture, to move and to regenerate. There can be no sane society without intact common resources.

The aim of Elevate 2008 is, together with scientists and activists, to raise awareness of the importance of Commons and to shed light on the social and cultural conflicts in the usage of these goods. This will be the framework for discussions, workshops, films and lectures as well as for the presentation of innovative projects.

participating are:

Farmer and winner of the Right Livelihood Award 2007, Percy Schmeiser (CA); musician, author and multimedia artist, Paul D. Miller a.k.a. DJ Spooky (US); journalist and Science Commons expert, Kaitlin Thaney (US); leader of Creative Commons Brazil, author and professor of law, Ronaldo Lemo (BR); author and Commons expert, David Bollier (US); founder of the Free Knowledge Network, Petra Buhr (DE); Commons activist and blogger Silke Helfrich (DE); Anne Schweigler (DE) from the BUKO campaign against biopiracy; political scientist and economist Massimo De Angelis (UK); Michael Tuck (US) from History Commons; Hans-Jochen Luhmann (DE) from the Institute of climate, environment and energy in Wuppertal; bestselling author and publicist Christian Felber (AT); board of iCommons member and "public project lead" of Creative Commons Netherlands, Paul Keller (NL); Stefan Meretz (DE), who studies the political economy of the free software movement; expert for international political economy and climate change, Achim Brunnengräber (DE); "legal project lead" of Creative Commons Austria, Florian Philapitsch (AT); co-director of the documentary film "Good Copy Bad Copy", Henrik Moltke (DK); and many more

All events are free of charge!

Artistic and musical innovations as well as the interaction of artists from various parts of the festival are the central themes of the 2008 programme. Shying away from superlatives, but rather opening the possibility for encounters in the intimate atmosphere of individual club nights, with artists and genres that are largely still unknown in this country. More than a hundred artists from twelve nations, most of who will perform live, cater to stylistic diversity.

Paul D. Miller is a conceptual artist, writer, and musician working in New York. His written work has appeared in The Village Voice, The Source, Artforum, Raygun, Rap Pages, Paper Magazine, and a host of other periodicals. Miller's first collection of essays, Rhythm Science, was published by MIT Press in April 2004, and was included in several year-end lists of the best books of 2004, including the Guardian (UK) and Publishers Weekly. Sound Unbound, an anthology of writings on sound art and multi-media by contemporary cultural theorists will follow Rhythm Science.

Miller's work as a media artist has appeared in a wide variety of contexts such as the Whitney Biennial; The Venice Biennial for Architecture (year 2000); The Venice Biennial of Art 2007 (Africa Pavilion), the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, Germany; Kunsthalle, Vienna; The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh and many other museums and galleries. His 2004 solo show at the Paula Cooper Gallery in New York, Path Is Prologue, echoed his live music/theater/film performance, "DJ Spooky's Rebirth of A Nation, which ran simultaneously at the Lincoln Center Festival after premieres in Vienna and at Spoleto USA in Charleston, SC and continues to tour globally. 2007 finds him working with internationally acclaimed stage director and playwright Robert Wilson, and preparing to travel to antarctica to being research and production on his next large scale multimedia performance piece The Antarctic Suite.

But even with all this, Miller is most well known under the moniker of his "constructed persona" as "DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid". Miller has recorded a huge volume of music and has collaborated a wide variety of musicians and composers such as Iannis Xenakis, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Kronos Quartet, Kool
Keith a.k.a. Doctor Octagon, Pierre Boulez, Killa Priest from Wu-Tang Clan, Steve Reich, Yoko Ono and Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth among many others. He also composed and recorded the music score for the Cannes and Sundance Award winning film Slam, starring critically acclaimed poet Saul Williams.

In 2006, Miller was given access to the vaults of the classic reggae label Trojan Records, resulting in his landmark compilation release In Fine Style, DJ Spooky Presents 50,0000 Volts of Trojan Records!!! on Sanctuary Records. Prior to that CD, Miller's most recently released Drums of Death, featuring Dave Lombardo of Slayer, Chuck D. of Public Enemy, Vernon Reid of Living Color, and Jack Dangers of Meat Beat Manifesto. Other notable recent albums include Optometry (2002), a jazz project featuring Matthew Shipp, William Parker, Joe McPhee, Carl Hancock Rux, Daniel Bernard Roumain, and High Priest from Anti-Pop Consortium; Dubtometry (2003), a dub remix of the same, featuring Lee "Scratch" Perry and Mad Professor; and Riddim Clash (2004), a collaboration with Twilight Dub Sound System.

In addition to his numerous records and articles released under the DJ Spooky name, another important project was a collaboration with Bernard Tschumi, Dean of Columbia University's architecture department, and author of Praxis: Event Cities. This piece debuted at the Venice Biennale of Architecture 2000. In the magazine world, Miller is co-publisher along with legendary African American downtown poet Steve Cannon of the magazine, A Gathering of Tribes -a periodical dedicated to new works by writers from a multicultural context and he was the first Editor-at-large of the cutting edge digital media magazine, Artbyte: The Magazine of Digital Culture.

Miller continues to add to his creative output across a broad cultural spectrum. 2007 finds him in production on the DVD version of Rebirth of a Nation, set for mid 2008 release by Starz Media, while he continues his globe-trotting series of live events; playing at festivals from France to Japan to Mexico City; performing solo, with chamber groups, and with orchestras; and giving talks at prominent
universities and conferences.

A man who became a famous glassblower after a hard youth in the misery of an American metropolis and is now a respectable techno producer. A musician who loves Hip Hop, makes techno and knows all lyrics from the Rolling Stones and Talking Heads by heart – Jay Haze is a man with many different faces. He is not only the name behind a number of aliases and projects like Fuckpony,Sub Version or The Architect but also the manager of several labels including TuningSpork, Futuredub, Contexterrior. While Tuningsporkstands for house orientated music, Futuredub is the homebase for his downtempo electronic dubs. In 2002 he additionally formed Contexterrior to release his techno productions. With his first full-length album on Kitty-Yo in 2005, Love for a Strange World, Jaytook a more personal and song-based approach while his new album, Love&Beyond, shows his fragmented personalities. The commercially released CD/2xLP showcases dancefloor productions from sci-fi techno to funky house, while the subsequent part (given away as a free download through his website) proves his love for soul and R&B.The album’s third act is composed entirely of instrumentals. Jay Haze does not simply produce house, techno or minimal, in his world musical boundaries don' t exist.

(Warp Records, Lucky me, Hyperdub / UK)

Glasgow's prodigal son Rustie is the sound of the underground. Having battered his way into our ears and minds under his Voltaic moniker with celebrated releases on Glasgow label Point and One Recordings, Rustie has recently come out all guns blazing. 'Jagz The Smack' was released on an unsuspecting public through fledgling label Stuff Records and quite literally sent shockwaves through the Electronic Music scene, with everyone from Modeselektor to Flying Lotus, Anthony Shake Shakir to Alex Smoke going absolutely crazy for it. An electronic maverick of the highest order, Rustie marries the energy of hyphy with the low slung bass of Dubstep while straddling the stuttering swagger of European electronica with the greatest of ease. 2008 has already seen further critically acclaimed releases on Stuff and Kode 9's Hyperdub label and remixes for Jahcoozi and Alex Smoke, with a remix also coming up for the legendary Warp Records as well as many more. Rustie is truly a producer in huge demand all over. His DJ & live shows have taken him all over the UK and Europe, and he´s recently played alongside Method Man & Redman, The RZA, Modeselektor, Flying Lotus and many more. This year he's already played at Bloc Festival where his set was later played on Mary Anne Hobb's Breezeblock show, as well as Sonar festival Quite simply, Rustie is at this point one of the most exciting electronic dance music artists on the planet.

With their fight against Monsanto’s abusive marketing practices, Percy and Louise Schmeiser have given the world a wake-up call about the dangers to farmers and biodiversity everywhere from the growing dominance and market aggression of companies engaged in the genetic engineering of crops.

Monsanto vs. Schmeiser
In 1998 Percy Schmeiser and his wife received a letter from the US agribusiness giant Monsanto claiming that they had used Monsanto seeds without a license in planting their 1997 crop. However, the Schmeisers had never bought Monsanto seed nor intended to have it on their land. It turned out that some Monsanto ‘Round-up Ready’ genetically modified canola (rape) seeds had blown over from the Schmeisers’ neighbour or from passing trucks. Thus, genes that Monsanto claimed to “own” under Canadian patent law had ended up in the Schmeisers’ seeds. Monsanto threatened to sue the Schmeisers for ‘infringement of patent’, seeking damages totalling $400,000. (CAD), including about $250,000. in legal fees, $105,000. in estimated profits from the Schmeisers’ 1998 crop, $13,500. ($15. an acre) for technology usage fees and $25,000. in punitive damages. At the same time, Monsanto offered to withdraw the legal challenge if the Schmeisers signed a contract to buy their seeds from Monsanto in the future and to pay the technology use fee.

But the Schmeisers neither gave in nor did they accept this attempted blackmail. They contested the case up to the Canadian Supreme Court, whose ruling supported Monsanto in their claim to own the gene. Thus the Schmeisers lost their breeding research, which they had built up for decades, and the varieties that they had painstakingly adapted to their local environment for years through cross-pollination, because they now contained the Monsanto-“owned” gene.
However, the court also concluded that the Schmeisers should not have to pay anything to Monsanto because they had not in any way benefited from having the seeds on their property.

Michael Tuck writes: "We are a community of users, contributors, writers, editors, designers, and database managers, collaborating on creating in-depth coverage of the events and issues of our times. We have no "leader" or "head," instead making decisions about the site and its contents on a communal, peer-driven basis. The contributors own their own content; the Commons provides an information base where the disparate material is brought together in a single, link-driven repository. Researchers and investigative reporters such as Craig Unger, Peter Lance, and the "Jersey Girls," the extraordinary band of 9/11 widows whose passion for truth and justice drove the Bush administration to create an independent investigative commission, regularly use the Commons for information and inspiration. We like to think that these words from journalism professor Philip Meyer encapsulate our vision: "The hunter-gatherer model of journalism is no longer sufficient. Citizens can do their own hunting and gathering on the Internet. What they need is somebody to add value to that information by processing it--digesting it, organizing it, making it usable." The History Commons is an experiment in open-source, open-content civic journalism. Like all such community-driven, citizen-based creations, the more people who participate, the better it functions. The History Commons is a small part of a much larger community, doing what we can to promote truth, honesty, and full disclosure."

For some, The Bug is a relatively new name associated with London’s (and now internationally) vibrant Dubstep scene. However for a lot of others, he is also known as Techno Animal/Ice/God, King Midas Sound, Razor X Productions, Cult Of The 13th Hour, Pressure, Ladybug, the man behind Pathological Records, compiler of various compilations for Virgin Records... Production work/collaborations include noise-jazz outfit 16-17, Pete "Sonic Boom" Kemper’s E.A.R projects, John Zorn, Kevin Shields, El-P, and Anti Pop Consortium. Also known for his bass booming remixes for Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Primal Scream, Einsturzende Neubauten, Stina Nordenstam, Dälek, etc… he released for labels as diverse as Ninja Tune, Virgin, Rephlex, Planet Mu, Soul Jazz, Klein, Matador, EMI, Position Chrome/Mille Plateaux, Word Sound, Hyperdub, City Slang, Tigerbeat 6,
The Bug project first came to be in 1997, when Kevin collaborated with DJ Vadim.
From 2001-2004 The Bug teamed up with UK dub veteran The Rootsman for a series of singles under the name Razor X Productions. The early productions of which would frame the template for the first proper Bug full length, 2003’s "Pressure". The Razor X material was some of Kevin’s first foray’s into what would become a signature head-sheering apocalyptic dancehall production style. With Pressure, Classic dancehall MC Daddy Freddy and New Flesh’s Toastie Taylor were brought in, along with The Rootsman, Roger Robinson, Paul St. Hilaire (aka. Tikiman), Wayne Lonesome, Sizzla, Ras B, Cutty Ranks…
Towards the end of this period The Bug got introduced to Kode 9 and a new crop of producers in London that were revolving around the Fwd Club at Plastic People. Discovering that these people shared the same hunger for bass and unaligned sonic trajectories, The Bug felt right at home alongside Loefah, Digital Mystikz, Skream, etc… Over time this group of people would shape what would be commonly known as Dubstep. Through his work with Wayne Lonesome, Kevin was turned on to the work of Warrior Queen which further shaped the musical direction of The Bug. The final piece of the new incarnation of The Bug came about when Kevin was booked for a Mary Anne Hobbs session of BBC Radio 1’s Breezeblock. Two of the main vocalists requested were Roll Deep’s Flowdan, and Ricky Ranking (best known for his work as vocal foil/inspiration to Roots Manuva).
All these connections became the starting point for ‘London Zoo’, the latest Bug album on Ninja Tune. Utilizing the aforementioned vocalists, along with UK reggae legend Tippa Irie, it’s a record grown out of the heart of London sound-system culture and multi-cultural meltdown, uniquely detonating dubstep, dancehall, grime, hip-hop, and noise onslaughts.
Finally, having remixed Thom Yorke to great critical acclaim at the Radiohead main-man’s request, Martin has also just completed a bass-bin shaking rework of Grace Jones at the request of the former model. From Aphex Twin to Massive Attack, Adrian Sherwood to Andy Weatherall, Kid 606 to Jerry Dammers (The Specials), they have all recognized the freak-beat originality of Kevin Martin’s singular progress in bass culture.

Bristol based DJ Pinch builds his dubstep sets with precision timing and choice selection to work a crowd up from deep meditation vibes to a full on skank mode, soaking up influences that span dub, techno, jungle, 2-step and beyond. He is known for bringing the dubstep sound to Bristol, hosting the first regular, now legendary, parties outside of London (Context, Subloaded, Dubloaded). He is also known for his excellent releases on Planet Mu, as well as running the highly respected Tectonic imprint – on which he released his debut album in 2007. He also runs Earwax – the sister imprint to Tectonic.
Pinch has played all across Europe and USA, earning him ‘South West’s Best DJ 2006’ in Venue magazine and a guest DJ spot on BBC Radio One’s Breezeblock show. He also remixed profile artists such as Simian Mobile Disco.

Passion for the synthetic pulse of grime and techno mixed with the rhythms and primal lusts of low-down, swamp rock 'n roll is what makes the music of Colin Bailey, Drums of Death. Add to this an electronic live show that solicits a hot mix of these influences and a desire to bring something wild to dark clubs and you have the ultimate rave-inflicting artist.
It's a testament to a youth spent in metal bands whilst growing up in a small Scottish town with subsequent discoveries of techno at raves in Glasgow and bass culture from his time in London.
The voice is just as an integral part to the Drums of Death experience than the profound bass pressure. Throwing out rhymes and lyrics with equal gusto, these twisted, FX-drenched flows and cut-up, destroyed yells trawl for influence from abstract sources, drawing upon strange imagery and bending reason and melody to breaking point.
Eschewing traditional production methods, Drums of Death seeks a rawer approach to recording in order to retain the fierce energy of the live shows.
