monitors only for producing?
Do you guys listen to music on your monitors or do you have other speakers for non-production listening? I'm just curious because my normal speakers broke a few days ago, so I've gotta get new ones. I'm really new to producing and therefor would probably hold off with buying monitors, if I could only use them for producing.

i use my monitors both for production and listening. admittedly mine are pretty nice on the ears (event project studio 8s).
think of it this way, if you get used to listening to music on the monitors that you use for production, you will have a much better idea of how things should sound in your production. you will hear how things are eqed and mixed on the tunes you like best, and that will give you the ability to hear where you want them to be in your own tunes.
best thing for your production, IMO.

some monitors are really raw and are designed for recording more than mixing, as you need to be able to hear every tiny little detail. There is no detriment to listening to music on raw speakrers, unless of course their is an inherent problem with what you are listening to and it is not balanced ect. As the guy above said getting used to your monitors is a really good thing to do. Personally i prefer to hear music with as little colouration from my system as possible, its how speakers should be and anything else is baisically a gimic to conn people into buying stuff. If ya on a budget i would reccomend a pair of old tannoy reveals (active), you can get em on e-bay for about £100.
i do this too. my neighbors complain to the council whenever i listen to/make music so now i'm accustom to headphones, although my headphones broke so now i'm stuck with ipod headphones, not good for making musicBlip wrote:I listen to and produce music mostly on headphones...

m8 monitors are the best way for quality and for being able to hear every detail within the mix.
i had some m-audio bx8a's but recently upgraded to some dynaudio BM5A's and the diference is MASSIVE (price too sadly) if you do come round to buying some buy a decent pair like KRK rp6's, tannoy reveals or spend abit more and get some dynaudios or genelecs, they'l last and sound amazing!

Congratulations but this is DUBSTEP not pop music. The clarity of the bass is one of the most important things and headphones are a very bad measure of bass.Blip wrote:If it sounds good on Ipod headphones...
If you can get your tunes sounding good on a variety of systems, from your monitors to your PC speakers to your car stereo then you are doing well. Personally I find that my car gives me an excellent feel for how well mastered a track is but that's only second to my monitors. If it sounds good on my monitors then blammo it's done.
... and your Ipod headphones. We actually mean the SAME thing.manray wrote:If you can get your tunes sounding good on a variety of systems, from your monitors to your PC speakers to your car stereo
There are headphones and headphones. You will get a lot more bass out of an Sennheiser HD25 than a standard computer speaker.
I think the point is if you listen on iPod headphones there is no way you will be able to mix sub bass unless you..........actually there is no way, its impossible.Blip wrote:... and your Ipod headphones. On topic, I find Hi-Fi speakers muddy and bass heavy so I prefer listening to music on my monitors, but without a separate sub I do tweak the bass up a bit for normal listening.

Let me make it clear, because obviously I haven't...
If you can make a mix sound good even on shitty Ipod headphones, that's a great achievement. Obviously there will be no bass or even more obviously, sub bass there. I never suggested that they should be your main reference, or that you should mix with them.
