Looking for help, how to set up dj battles?

Post by hysteria » Wed Oct 15, 2008 9:06 pm

Im planning a big rave this november,
and i want to put on a DJ battle, maybe somekinda
Dubstep Vs Drum and bass kinda thing,

I was thinking of not asking just incase its really obvious how to do an like maybe make me look like a fool but fuck it.

Im guessing i'll need 2 sets of decks, 2 mixers or 1?
An mc to host it obviously.

So would it basically just be like the dubstep guy putting on a song, then the dnb guy putting on a song, an seeing what the crowd likes the best?
Or do you have them like mixing for a few minutes each?

Im guessing it shouldn't go on for too long, otherwise it would kinda loose the edge of it.. so how long do u reckon 10 minutes, half an hour?

And any other info would be fucking amazing
I've been wanting to set this up for ages, but just dont have the know exactly how. :o

hold some kind of meeting of DJs, making you cyrus from the warriors and some rogue DJ (lets say jo whiley) shoots you down and blames it on threnody and he gets involved in some properly mental chase around the streets of london, with run ins with skream, geeneus and johnny vaughn along the way. sounds like your onto a hit there, sir. big ups.

check out Juice . . .

but on the serious tip, soundclash isn´t exactly a dj battle . . .
I'd love to se some actual dj skills competing both on tunes and on style . . .

Well if you are doing "DJ Battles" you obviously have a vague idea of what you want to happen.

Why not just get the DJ's to play b2b with each other? 5 songs each on rotation?

to get a real battle feel i was gonna suggest 3 tunes per dj, b2b style. for 45 mins. then last 15 mins one for one. @ the end of the set you get the punters to hold up coloured cards (that you give out on entry to everyone) as to which was the best (this usually works better that crowd cheering as some people have "noise making skills" which can make a result a bit bias'd).
repeat with diff djs thru the night.
If you wanted to make a "final" to get the no.1 dj of the night you could do a series of knockdown rounds with the last set (say 5-6) the "final" tho a simple collection of b2b sets each with there own winner i think wud make for a more interesting and varied night music-wise.
the most importnat thing to do is to make the dj's realise its just for fun, and not to take it all seriously, losers might get the hump, but its all just a stage show, so make sure they realise that ;)

That sounds a lot better. I personally prefere 4 or 5 songs to myself but it really doesnt matter.

Could always make them fight to the death? Each DJ takes a turntable and batters each other. Fabric may not think this is such a good idea though... :)

Yeh i like the back to back idea aswell but it doesnt seem as like epic haha
Do u reckon it would be a good idea to get one of the DMC champions to come down an judge it?

Maybe if i got two different record labels, like a dubstep one and a dnb one then have it like a label battle? an the winner gets to do an hour set or sumin?

atari's got a good idea about the cards, never thought of that...

I would'nt reccomend a label soundclash unless you were getting the label owners 2 play, which would be quite sick thinking about it
