Any ninja's do philosophy?

Post by fuagofire » Fri Oct 17, 2008 5:28 am

I got into an argument in a pub the other night over when a philosophy student said to me 'how do you know you exist?' - this struck me as a pretty stupid question, after saying - 'well i think there-fore i am' he was not sure that was an argument so i punched myself in the face and informed him that fucking hurt and something that did not exist couldn't hurt itself. anyway after a while of this him and his mate left the pub saying i was stupid and closed minded.
I'm pretty that's a bit like saying 'how do you know gravity exists?'

i just want to ask someone who knows a bit about philosophy, where this question comes from? and why i shouldn't think it's a stupid question?

im not a philosophy student but i know a bit about it. where the people you where in the pub with first years?

sounds like that are.

its very basic philosophy. its just ment to get you thinking about the way you think.

and its is a stupid question because what you said "i think there for i am" proves it wrong, (well imo it dose)

I remember taking a first year philosophy class and they posed a similar question. ' How do you know ( insert location ) this place exsists if you have never been there?'

Answering I've seen pictures of the place does not cut it. You truly can't know until you go there, everything else is just a belief.

I'm not sure but i think this type of philosophy you speak of is called epistomology, or the theory of knowledge.

I thought I was going to major in Philosophy until I realized it is not a very pragmatic degree, it doesn't bake any bread.

If a tree fell down in a forest, and nobody was around to hear it, would it make a sound?

How do you know the tree exists? What about the forest? Do we not just live in a figure of our imagination? How do you know green is actually green if you don't know any different?

Surely you can't teach someone to be philosophical? You either are or your not. Its like teaching someone to be artistic.

sounds like a shit discussion but the question cannot be dismissed, it is something that humans have considered for centauries, it is a questions that spans generations, race, culture.

it is not a pointless question but it is also not something you just throw out there, or turn to someone and expect them to answer, it is a question you ask yourself and then contemplate on deeply.

the end result of my contemplation on this matter, many years ago, was does it matter if I exist or not? and furthermore what is existence?...yeah the pub isn’t the place for this kind of talk, this stuff belongs on the couch at home after a huge blazing sess.

I agree with this to a certain degree.

Although I'm very much interested in Philosophy, and questions such as "How do you know you exist?", I don't know everything about it. I've been thinking of trying my hand at a Philosophy class for years, simply because I want to learn more than what I already know.

well if we didn't exist we wouldn't be able to sit around talking about it. im not saying i think all philosophy is bollocks but i consider that question stupid.
It was the jamaca bar and i was quite pissed.

But how do you know that you are actually sitting around a table discusing shit, you have had lucid dreams that you thought were real, until you woke up. Couldn't exsistance be a dream within a bigger dream?

you can't teach someone to be philosophical but you can teach the theory behind it, and surely anyone taking the course should have an interest/ability in it

i think classics degrees are valid but mainly studied by pretentious arseholes

Yeah, I just mean in terms of the educational system. People seem to learn about the history of it rather than being left to their own devices. I know fuck all about philosophy but I assume critical, independent thought is essential. They can't really teach you that past a certain point.
