How to mix halfstep and full step ?
How to mix halfstep and full step ?
How do you mix the halftime with the full time ?
when i make a tune ill put the snares on the 9th note of a 16 note bar when set to 140bpm. essentially needing 2 bars to make one full bar a drum loop(half time).
so that would probably mean the snares should be hitting inbetween the first and second snare of the full step song. on the 9th note of the fullstep bar, with the full step snares on 5 and 13. at least mathmatically and in a sequencer it seems it should look like that and sound like that.
But when i mix i naturally want to match the snares and tend to match both halfstep snares on the second snares of the full step song.
is one techneque the right way and one the wrong way ? i know it comes down to how it sounds in the end but im sure theres a way that is right or sounds naturlly correct more often than not.

@ kion yeah maybe.
do you produce ?
i think thats why my mind thinks like that. i sort of see songs in a sequencer when i lisn to them so it makes my analyze things like this.
i think its important as a dj to know how tracks work and why sounds work or why techniques work or dont work.
like i said it does come down to how it sounds in the end , but to just write off knowing the techniqal side of things imo is doing a great diservice to ones self.

duh!

im probably am looking into it to deep. but that doesnt meen its not a good idea to know what why and how your doing things.
just mixing it is the easy way to look at things, knowing why your mixing the way you do or knowing why your not mixing it the other way can seperate a good dj and from a not good dj imo.

mixing first beat with first beat would mean the halftime snare hits in the middle of the two full snares.
see this is pretty much what made me start this thread, i dont think most of us are doing it this way. i dont, i match the snares but that leads to the wierd phrasing and the drops will be off.
so how are you guys doing it ? those of you who said just mix it especially.

match up the first beat of a bar, not the snaresPress wrote: a way that is right or sounds naturlly correct more often than not.
Don't mix with the snares, mix with the first note of the bar. Usually a bassdrum, but not always. I know it's difficult, but it's the only way to go to sound good. You have to feel the music, otherwise you won't be a good dj. Don't count the bars, feel them!
But as other here mention, don't mix everywhere. The tracks are usually build up the same way: After 64 notes there is a change (more/less instrument, break, whatever) and that's where you should mix in so the track work together well.
Beware of one track losing tension and one goes up... Doesn't sound good - regardless of double dropping or not.

one thing that might be confusing you is the fact that some half step leaves the snare to hit on the 13th beat of the 16 eg loefah remix of punisher.
i really don't see what's confusing you!
in general half step, the snare hits on the 9th of the 16th
if you try and mix the 9th beat of one track with the 13th of another, your mix is gonna go all over the place. yes, they may be in time, but one tune will suddenly drop and it will sound horribly out of place.

sorry if i sound confused im really not i get it. i got it before i started the thread i wanted to discuss the 2 techniques because i dont think most djs are mixing on the one but are mathcing the snares, and even though theres the wierd drops, while it is in the mix i think it really does sound better mixing the snares untill its time to stop the mix.
and your right when they just drop the first snare to make it half that changes things aswell.

I think "just mix it" is the best advice given so far, but it might not have been explained that well.
Mixing from the first beat is the only way you are likely to get tunes dropping in and out together and whatnot.
In dubstep i don't think its worth worrying too much about snare positioning, cos they can be all over the place in this type of music.
Also, some tunes will be unquantised or swung to hell, in which case they might not mix well - or sound in time - with less swung tunes or whatever.
I.e. some tunes just won't mix well.
