whenever i hear it it makes me cringe, i dunno if it works with dubstep. Rossi B and Luca seem to have started doing it in their grime sets too and even though they technically pull it off (unlike certain London DJs i've heard do it really badly on the fly, not naming any names...) i still recon it sounds horrible.

No disrespect Lexxus, im yet to hear you do it. Will peep.

No... I've never felt scratching was worthwhile, in any genre of music. Including hip hop.

What's the point?

Impressive as it might be, it's about the tunes, not technical skill.

Maybe I just don't get it.

Got to say i always cringe with it when it comes to dnb/dubstep/grime.....Maybe dubstep or dnb in a turntablist set is cool....scratch up the tracks in the context of a scratch set but let them breath in a mix.

I think it can work in almost any format as long as it's done artistically and "with" the music vs. "against" the music. Scratching because you can scratch vs. scratching because it FITS with the music the mix are two totally separate things. If the specific scratch adds to the music, I'm all for it, even in the mix. It just depends on how it's done.

I've yet to hear it really well done over dubstep, but over grime instrumentals, it can sound nice. I think some DJs just carry things a bit to far and make scratching the focus and that takes away from the music / the mix.

It should be like MCing - complementary. Not overwhelming.

Great point. I'd always thought it would be phat to have one DJ playing a set, and then have another scratching and/or dropping random samples in time to the music. None of those stereotypical 80's hip-hop sounds either...but just sounds that help set the mood.

To each their own!!!!!!

I h8 it when people try to impose their personal opinions on other people's tastes and/or skills. If turntablism & dubstep don't work in the mix for you, that's fine, but THAT'S YOU! Please don't get all DOA on us with absolutes or try to make rules up!

I personally attempt to be as tastefully minimal as possible when I employ the art of turntablism over any of the styles I play. On my "Doozzee" mix, I only cut in the intro. On my "Ombilikal" mix, I chose only 2 parts to cut over and those were chosen after several successful gigs where the audience was really feeling my routine.

We've all heard bad scratching, and we've hopefully all heard good scratching...but its the same as hearing bad/good mixing...if two choons don't work together, they don't work. If a certain routine works for one deejay, then let em own that, don't diss! :W:

^^^ That's precisely it though, you're doing it because you should, not because you can.

You've thought it through, worked it out, got the feedback and bought the T-shirt.

I think most people here are talking in general vs. specifics.

Totally agree, In general, all the scracthin ive heard over dubstep has been junk. I grew up 4 blocks from DJ Craze and went to school with the cat, so i know what good scratchin is. Maybe i hold the bar to high mentally but thats how i grew up.

ill give ya mix a peep Lex and let yeah know my thoughts.
