chorus and flanger
hello
Just saw a doc. about reagga, and notised the producer applaying chorus from an hardware unit, but it was pretty had to hear the results on the video.
I played a little with the one inside Renoise, but every try sounded more like a UFO was about to land in my bedroom.
do you guys ever use chorus/flanger for dubstep, and how do you applay it ?
thanx

like most effects...it's all about the context you use it in really.
i use some chorus on some bass sounds...(e.g reeses)
flange can sound good as an effect when used on snares (this technique was used alot on roots dub)...i did use it on the bass in a tune once.

if i any of the delay-based fX (chorus/flanger/phaser) as a send, it's generally to weird-out the mids and tops of a bass sound, and keep the bottom solidly mono.
chorus works great as an insert. most synths have some sort of delay-fx built in, some are great, some are crappy. can definitely smooth things out or put an edge on them, depending on yr settings.
in dubstep i hear alot of flanging on hats and shakers-- check the intro to 'night' for a great example.

I use chorus sometimes to widen the stereo image of a synth pad or lead. I use it not so much as an audible effect, but to help fatten and widen a sound. Try the chorus on a really slow speed, the intensity about 1/3 up and feedback about half way. But then this technique is subjective to the material your working on. In the 80's chorus was used on bass to make them widen and sound big.
