What do u use your desk for? Ive got an eight track desk i got given and all i use it for is controlling the output of my monitors. Ive heard people saying they re-record out through it and then back into the computer but im not sure how to do this.

Im getting given some hardware bits soon and would like to start using them. Say ive got a compressor for example setup on one channel, how would i go about recording out through this? I'm using Cubase SX3.

I'm not to sure because I don't have an analog mixer myself, but I think you would re-record trough it by routing the out's on your soundcard tot the in's of the mixer and then the output from the mixer back to the soundcard, that sounds most logical to me.

if you're going to be using the compressor - you may want to bypass the mixer

The principles are pretty much the same as if you were routing/recording audio within your DAW unless your using reason

just be careful of feedback - have the volume low when setting this up.

So bypass my mixer and run straight into my external soundcard is that what your saying?

Im still a bit confused, how would i then be able record my audio/midi part with the compressor on it? I can't just hit record in Cubase can I?

I'm trying to achieve what Clipz

does in his computer music tutorial.

It depends on your sound card what routing you can do, but sx3 allows you to have hardware integrated to its mixer.

The easiest way to do it would be to send some audio out of your soundcard into the mixer, then take the output of the mixer and record it back through your soundcard. As Whineo said, be careful of feedback. With your compressor, if your mixer has send channels you could put your compressor on those channels and then adjust the amount of compression. Just mess around with it though, you'll find what works best for you.

And just a basic 8 channel mixer.

If i setup an audio track in Cubase and then hit record then its not goin to record anything is it? Will I have to change the output on my mixer or something? i know im being dumb but im just tryin to get my head around it!!! Anyone got any guides or anything worth reading on hardware??

I'm gonna go home and have a play about now and see how it goes!!!

Your Wrong, if you have something playing out your soundcard, and is plugged into the ins of your soundcard, whilst recording, or input monitoring, you get a massive feedback loop that can seriously damage your speakers!

phantom power is needed for mic input on a desk.

I used it to run a Proteus 2000 through, MS2000 through and to also run the audio back into my s'card to bounce audio out.
